Europcar and Portugal Tolls

Just wondering if anyone has any recent experience with Europcar in Portugal. We have booked a car with AutoEurope to pick up in Porto and keep for 8 days, returning in Lisbon.

Because of the toll system, I am planning to use the transponder in the car and agree to have Europcar bill my credit card for the tolls accrued. There are posts on both Fodor's and Trip Advisor complaining about Europcar's method of billing for the tolls using multiple charges and credits which causes additional foreign transaction fees. Since I will be using an Amex card with no foreign transaction fee, perhaps there is no reason for me to be concerned. Also, I could just forgo the transponder and pay the tolls at a post office or paystop in Lisbon where we will be for another six days after turning in the car.

These threads are not very recent. Maybe things have changed? Would love to hear from someone with recent experience.

I didn't bother reading the older threads.
I did as you state and was billed ok, but I'm european.
I guess what can happen is the agency billing you in $ instead of Euros and therefore overchargin.

Wo, glad to hear there was nothing weird about how they billed you. Perhaps they have changed their billing practices to be more simple and straight-forward. That would be good news. I'm not really asking about billing in $ or € (DCC), but I assume that is becoming more common everywhere and I'll be watchful. Thanks for responding.

ribeirasacra - Thanks for the link to the map of the toll roads. That will be very useful.

The tolls are only cmplicatd to pay if you have a non registerd car in Portugal.
Even if you regually travel in Portugal obtaining a transponder is difficult!!
Just sit back relax and listern to the beeps. Ceack how much yu should be charged at the end via the websites for piece of mind.
