The Roma Pass offers health services for tourists as part of the card. Perhaps you can call that number.
Roma Pass Travel Health MET
By calling the multilingual CALL CENTER, 06-43236291, available 24 hours a day, it is possible to:
Ask information about public and private medical facilities available throughout the city
Receive information regarding location, address, telephone number and method of access to the Public Healthcare Facilities that are closest or most appropriate for the resolution of health related problems
Activate, after explicit request, the medical assistance services (house-call visits, diagnostic services, specialty services, ambulance services), provided by Travel Health MET to Roma Pass holders at discounted fees

ekscrunchy, alec and kybourbon, Tks all for the information, very much appreciated. Have called quite a few and found a local with minimal English but very helpful who could fit me in straight away. Have seen him, and while he can't get rid of the pain straight away has expelained the most likely cause and given me a script. Now hoping to buy some backup paracetamol for the pain (the pharmacist didn't get that bit) and hope the script medicine kicks in soon. Very helpful dentist and staff, even asked me to call back this evening to let him know if there is any change AND all for a price less than I'd pay back home.
Thanks to all for your help will keep the info handy as I travel just in case!
Cheers

Sorry everyone, haven't been on for ages, thanks for the info even though very late!,
It's the Thought that counts and who knows, someone else may appreciate it.
To fill you in: The dentist I found was great. Fixed the problem. Enjoyed practicing his English.
Travel insurance covered the costs once back home and while still there the Australian embassy sent me a comprehensive list of specialists who speak English.
Thanks again all.
