Dublin to Donegal
We will be driving from Dublin to Donegal in one day. We would welcome any suggestions regarding what route to take as well as what to see or do along the way. This is our first trip to Ireland. We will be leaving early morning and hope to arrive before dark.

Around Dublin there are a few nice places to visit like Trim Castle and Butterstream Gardens.
After your visits have lunch in Mullingar and you could take your route through The Republic of Ireland via Longford-Garrick on Shannon-Sligo-Donegal this will be about a 3 hour drive.
You can also go direction Drogheda and visit the Boyne valley and Newgrange. And take the above mentioned route through Northern Ireland. You won't be encountering borders. The only difference is that km change into miles and the currency changes into Pound Sterling. From Drogheda you can also drive to Mullingar and pick up the route there.
Have a nice holiday!

Tourismireland/t0urisumireland whatever you want to call yourself on forums. This is why your itineraries for our visitors are so totally Off Base. Not that my voice will make any difference but you really need to have a close look at the products you are offering when it comes to itineraries.
There is no way on gods green earth or at least Irish roads that you can legally drive from Dublin to Donegal in 3 Hours.
I have in hind sight revised my route options on the Frommers forum.
----------------
"Probably looking at 3 1/2 to 4 hours on good major roads plus any stops. The slight disadvantage might be that you will have to inform your rental car people you will be traveling through UK Ireland. Shouldn't make any difference but some companies might add a small charge.
The M4/N4 to Sligo and then the N15 up would take about the same time and keep you in the Republic but adds a few miles, This might actually be the better route thinking about it. (now the new roads are in play, used to be a pain before the upgrades)"
