Dublin to Donegal

It's been awhile since I drove to Donegal from the Belfast area. I'm thinking about 3 hours, give or take. It's about 2-2.5 hours from Dublin to Belfast. From Dublin, just stick to the major routes, but look out for signs for Newgrange. It's worth a stop. Also, if you have the time, from Belfast, take the Antrim Coast road (head toward Carrickfergus--there's a castle there you might want to stop at) up north. It's a longer route, but it's a wonderful drive. Stop off at the Carrick-a-Rede Bridge, Giant's Causeway, Dunluce Castle, Bushmill's Distillery, Portrush (if the weather's nice--it's a coastal town).

Again, if you have time, after you hit Bushmill's, you may want to swing down into Derry city. There's a tour you can take walking on the walls that surround the city. It's a city with a fascinating and sad history.

From there, look at a map, and take the most direct route. Just look for a map that has route numbers for every road. You shouldn't have a problem finding your way around.

All of this is obviously going to take you more than 5-6 hours.

Anon,

You don't need to go to Belfast enroute from Dublin to Donegal. Take the N1 out of Dublin aurport and head upt to Drogheda where you can stop off and visit the ancient passage graves of Newgrange and then cross over to the N2 and onto Carrickmacross and follow the signs for Monaghan and then cross into Northern ireland and onto Omagh where you can stop off and see the Ulster American Folk Park and have a break. From there head for Derry and cross into Donegal.

It is best go through Northern Ireland as it cuts a lot of time off your trip and in places then roads are better. Non stop it takes about 4 hours. It is not a trip to take after a long trans altantic flight.

Hope this helps,

Cathy
