Driving time from Barcelona to Valencia
We will be touring from Barcelona to Valencia the end of July - are there any "must see" stops? How long will the trip take assuming costal traffic, etc? Any restaurant suggestions along with way?

Tarragona, thirty minutes outside of Barcelona is worth a stop. Lovely old town, narrow streets etc.
Other than that, hit the road! Take the autovia to knock the miles out quickly. A short morning only.

It won't take all that long on the motorway, however be aware that you will be paying many tolls along the way so the cost adds up quickly.
I lived in Valencia for the past 5 months and you can easily see the town in 2 days - just watch out for all the dog poo on the streets!

the most spectacular stop on the way would be peñiscola. well worth a few hours/coffee and if you can catch the birds of prey show at the castle garden, go for it. this is where EL CID was filmed. charleton heston used to come for the film festival every few years!
otherwise the trip should take no more than 3.5 hours on the toll road.
the free road has much improved but will add an hour on the trip, but if money is an issue, not the end of the world. itīs the way we used to all go.
perhaps take toll road to peñiscola ( half way) and the normal road from there??
be sure you know HOW to get to your destination in valencia as the signs once off the highway can be confusing, and you have to make a decision, like NOW, once you leave toll booth!.
in general, valencia downtown would just be straight ahead shot from the toll booth.. NOT off to the right to "Valencia Este", which would be the way to go to the outskirts of valencia or continuing south to alicante, bypassing the city, or to catch the westerly madrid road.
where is your hotel?
i, however, feel the tolls are worth the extra safety.
yes, watch out for remnants of dog feces.. but more important, watch your belongings in this entire country.
we are plagued with bastard bands of professional thieves.
