Driving through Portugal/Cadiz

Hubby and I plan to drive from Lisbon to Faro. Other than Cascais, any picturesque and beautiful towns along the way? Any on the coast? Any worth spending a day in? Any recommendations on activities/entertainment/restaurants in Faro? How about Cadiz?

Thanks in advance!

Cadiz is a very old port town, absolutely beautiful if you are willing to explore. Great food and incredible tapas at El Faro. Stay at the Parador Atlantico for a fabulous location and a good price.

The road south from Lisbon doesn't appear to follow the coast, but brings you out at Sagres near Cape St Vincent.

See this area and then head east through Lagos, Portimao, Albufeira to Faro and beyond as far as Tavira.

Warning: the traffic in the small coastal towns between Portimao and Faro is nightmarish at this time of year.

Another warning: to reach Cadiz you have another 300km of not very interesting driving after Tavira.

Cadiz didn't appeal to me when we stayed there earlier this month (see my earlier post). We travelled from Seville, which we loved, so Cadiz was a bit of a let-down. Couldn't quite put my finger on what we didn't like about it, but our hotel was a bit dingy (but VERY cheap and spotless) and our first two meals (lunch and dinner) were marred by rude waiters. It just left a bad impression. Cadiz does have a beautiful beach - Playa de la Victoria - which is very clean and nice, and the Cathedral is very impressive. Lots of people really like it - it just didn't gel with us.

Are Lagos, Portimao and Albufeira interesting enough to stop in? Any attractions there?

So far we are planning to visit Sintra, Cascais, Estoril- none on actual route...So, I am thinking about staying 3 days in Lisbon - 1 or 2 in Lisbon and 1 for Cascais/Estoril. Then drive down.

Is Faro worth an over-night stay or should I head to Sevilla?

Thanks
