Driving from Sweden to Norway's fjords

After visiting Stockholm, we have about 8 1/2 days to drive through Sweden & Norway. This must include 2 full days (3 nights) in Oslo at the end. We were going to drive to Lillehammer as a path of least resistance from Stockholm to the Sognefjord and Bergen areas, but we would prefer castles & glass factories over scenic farmland. Can we get to the fjords from Gotlund??? In one day?? Can someone recommend an interesting one or two day driving trip from Stockholm to Sognefjord? Thanks in advance

kte: The fjords and Gotland are in opposite directions from Stockholm. Not many castles in fjord country and the best castle, Kalmar, and glass works are in Southern Sweden. Again, in the opposite direction from the fjords.
From Stockholm, you will have to make the long day's trip to lillehammer (or Lom if you can make it), then to Sognefjord or Geiranger or both, then Bergen for two days, return to Oslo by the Southerly route (direct) and have your three days in Oslo.
Others will probably talk to you about taking trains: from Stockholm, overnight to Bergen for two days; one day Nutshell (train/bus in fjords) ending up in Oslo for your required three days. This would leave you with two days which you might use for additional time in the fjords, a cruise on a freighter up the coast aways from Bergen, or more time in Bergen and/or Oslo. Or, you could take the fast ferry to Gotland from Stockholm (before heading to fjord country), spend a couple of days in Visby)and return to Stockholm for your night train to Bergen. Or, spend one day at Visby, ferry over to Oskarshamn and bus down to Kalmar to see the Castle and train back to Stockholm. This would be very rushed, but doable if you really want to see Gotland and a great castle.
Hi
Swedish roads are not very fast, but they are quicker than in Norway !

You need to get to the Norwegian west coast quickly to see much of it.

Drive Stockholm - Gothenburg on the motorway (4 hrs). See some of the west coast islands , say Orust. Maybe stay in Ljungskile.

Drive Gothenburg - Oslo (4 hrs). Tour from Oslo.

Alternatively pick up the Stromstad - Larvik ferry ( 3hrs from Gothenburg)and take the road to Stavanger, where the fjords start.

8 days is going to limit your options.

Bon chance

Peter
