Does anybody know the town of Hostalric, in Catalogne, near Giron?
The title says it all. I'm considering staying there for a couple days, but I can't find a lot of informations on the web, besides the site of the town itself. In particular, I didn't find any infos about restaurants, hotels...
So, if somebody visited the town, was it a pleasant place to stay? Would you recommend an hotel (pension, bed and breafast, whatever)? A restaurant?

By the way, I could be interested in other places in the same general area (between Giron and Barcelona). I would prefer a small historical (castle, old houses, etc..)town, and it must be accessible by train.

You might enjoy staying in one of the paradores.

Do you mean Girona?

Hi clairobscur:
I did a search on Viamichelin.com, usually very good for finding restuarants and hotels, and found nothing IN the village, but several options in the outlying areas.
I know you are an experienced traveler, so I assume you know that the website provides information on restaurant, accommodation and "sights"?
Regards Ger

clairobscur,
I have stayed near Hostalric in tiny Gualba at the beautiful 13th century reconverted farmhouse, the Mas Ferrer. We stayed there for 2 reasons:
First-
to re-explore the Montseny Nature Park. We did the very pretty drive from there up to Viladrau then down the GI 552 through Arbúcies to Hostalric. Montseny is a very scenic area and not far from Barcelona but to explore all the beauty of the area, one would absolutely need a car.
Second reason for our stay:
to splurge on a meal-of-a-lifetime at the 3 Michelin star Racó de Can Fabes in Sant Celoni.
While Gualba is also on the Cercanías 2 line from BCN, our lodging, the Mas Ferrer, is a 2 km. drive from the village, so you would need a car.
You can check www.toprural.com and do a search for Hostalric and rural hotels. It will give you a list of those in that vicinity. Then you can check www.renfe.es to see what villages other than Hostalric are on either the Cercanías 2 (Renfe will give you a route map) or the regular train line from BCN to Girona.
There is no parador directly on route between Girona and BCN. The Vic Parador is 15 km. from the city of Vic and the Cardona Parador is quite isolated as well. And to reach the Aiguablava Parador on the sea directly east of Girona one would need a car.
Do a search as well at
www.guiacampsa.es which is the site of the very reliable Campsa Guide, which will give you hotels and restaurants in that area.
And reliable bus service in the Girona area is provided by SARFA. Check their routes at www.sarfa.com
