Do American College Student IDs work for free museum entrance

Looking at the Prado and it says that students 18-25 get in free. Will an American college ID work for this or is a special ID required?

Also, do you still need to get tickets for the college students, albeit free ones, or do they just show their ID and therefore don't need a ticket.

Two words. "It depends"!

You might get in someplace, depending on who is taking the tickets, others may adhere strictly to the rules. It works best if you speak Spanish, Catalan or Euskara, the language of the Basque speakers.

Agree that it depends on the window person.

In past experience, college ID PLUS passport or driver license showing age tends to work well.

https://www.isic.org/

Get for about $15 the International Student Identity Card, issued by the international offices at many universities or by mail - this is one internationally recongized proof of student status that will be accepted by nearly all museums offering student rates - a local student univeristy card may or may not - ISTC I believe has entered into agreements with museums, etc.

But more and more being under a certain age is the key and has nothing to do with student status - thus depending on what countries you go to the ISTC card may be a boon or not useful - in Italy it is - and at any museum listing student discounts not based on just age.
