Distance between Munich airport/Marienplatz

We are flying in to the Munich Airport and want to stay in the center of town the first night on our way to Austria. Is it a pain to lug our baggage from the airport to a hotel in Marienplatz? How many trains is that? There are 4 of us, is a cab out of the question? We don't want to stay near the Hauphbaunhof...Any suggestions?

Allison,

there are direct trains from Munich Airport to Marienplatz. They run every 20 minutes during daytime. The ride takes about 36 minutes. See

http://bahn.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/en

for details. Just enter 'München Flughafen Terminal' and 'München Marienplatz'.

Regards, Jochen

It's really easy to catch the train at the airport. There are 2 lines and either one will take you to Marienplatz. I don't remember the price but it's probably 10-15dm each. Getting your luggage from the train to your hotel could be a pain if it's more than you can easily carry, it's raining or you hit Marienplatz at a busy time. I think a taxi for 2 costs about 150dm but I'm not sure, and I don't know how much it would increase for 4. If you take the train, just try not to get frazzled if Marienplatz is packed and people seem to be crawling all over you. If you can deal with your luggage, the train is easy and probably faster (or as fast) as a taxi and a lot cheaper.

Allison, I stayed (alone) at a hotel directly across from the Hauptbanhof (sp? - oh the train station) and did not find the area to be anything other than okay. It was middle of December with about 8 hours of daylight so I was coming and going in the dark frequently and felt completely safe. It was VERY convenient for the airport but it isn't a short ride. Seemed to me about an hour. And staying by the train station would be close to the Augustiner brewery. "Oh, du lieber Augustin, alles ist hin." Have fun and wiener schnitzel.
