Lived in Rome for many years and never went on a dinner cruise until.... I went to a school function with my wife on a "dinner cruise" boat. Certainly glad I did not have to pay. The food was poor, there were no views as the walls were too high... and the river was dirty. A totally forgettable experience.

Patricia, when you get to Rome and see the river you'll understand.
There are so many great restaurants in Rome, you'll be spoiled for good food.
And walking around Rome is a feast for the eyes.
Have a great trip.

Well, I googled this and apparently there are several. Hub and I were usually there in March so it must have been too early in the season.
Does anyone know for how many years these have been available? Doug Stallings, does Fodor's have any info?
There are high walls in Paris also but still dinner cruises. New info for me, PatriciaOne. At least rineurope has been on one-do you remember what company???

"Does anyone know for how many years these have been available?"
From 2003

Before these high walls were built the Tiber would overflow its banks and even flood the Roman Forum.
In the 19C after one of these floods archaeologists noticed as the flood waters slowly receded that the floor of the Basilica Julia in the Roman Forum was tilted both in its length and width so that one corner was the lowest point.
This would allow any esp heavy windblown rain to drain off the floor. Regards, Walter

The dinner cruises have been available quite a few years. Until a year or so ago, there were also the transport cruises on the Tiber where you could catch a boat at one bridge such as Ponte S. Angelo and cruise to the others such as Ponte Sisto. It was only 1€. You can also catch a day cruise on the Tiber to Ostia Antica.

I should add that I think a few of the comments are by people that have not been to Rome recently. Rome has been cleaning up the walkways along the Tiber and adding restaurants, open air movies, etc. Particularly the areas around Ponte S. Angelo (the Castel Sant'Angelo side of the river) and Ponte Sisto. Some of these are probably seasonal as are the river cruises.

The restaurants, open air movies - like on Isola Tiberina, and shopping along the river is quite seasonal. It's part of **Lungo il Tevere Roma** - see: http://www.lungoiltevereroma.it/
It appears the 2012 "summer event" will run through August 28, 2012. Last year (2011) the booths ran all the way up to Ponte Mazzini. The Trastevere side of the river always seems to have more booths (and better shopping as my wife the expert has determined). We go down with friends to enjoy the atmosphere and a glass of wine. We've been less-than-impressed by the restaurants that coincide with the event.
Castel Sant Angelo used to have a great celebration around the monument - multiple stages, bands, and events. But now, the last couple of years (and especially the summer of 2011) they've scaled that celebration back and moved to the "riverfront" location as mentioned by kybourbon. It seemed less touristy years ago (like events geared toward locals), and although it does not attract the crowds you see between Ponte Garibaldi and Ponte Sisto, it's still quite popular.
TDudette, I don't remember the boat we were on - it was a TOTALLY forgettable experience. The Tiber is NOT the Seine and a cruise on this river will not generate the scenery you see in Paris. There's just not that much along the river. We were in Paris last weekend and took "another" cruise down the Seine (perhaps our third or fourth ride). I can't see myself ever doing another boat ride on the Tiber...
