Hi Everyone!

Apologies if this is the wrong place - still finding my way around the forum.

I broke my foot about a month ago and now can't go skiing. I was wondering if anyone could suggest some places, probably Europe because of budget that my boyfriend and I could go to for a long weekend?

I have an aircast on my foot rather than a full cast and no crutches but can't walk too much. Our preference would be somewhere in Italy as we already have a week in France booked this summer but open to ideas.

We're really into our food so would like somewhere with good food choices and some culture but isn't too big so that we feel like we've missed out.

Have you checked with your doctor it is okay to fly for long hours? Very much worth doing.

Regarding Italy, what do you like to eat? The food is very different all over the country.

Then I would suggest flying into Tuscany, renting a car, staying at a nice agriturismo and doing scenic drives. Think about renting a wheelchair.

Sandralist, there's not a lot of food that I don't like...

We stayed in Santa Margherita in October and loved that area but we're worried that lots of places will be closed as it's out of season.

We're looking at mid/end of March.

Santa Margherita Ligure has a fairly large resident population and is open year round. The last half of March is really not an ideal weather window for just a weekend, and I don't think it is a great place with a broken foot.

Sorrento might be nice and a bit warmer, plus it is totally flat. There is not much more to do there than in Santa Margherita Ligure, but you could take a bus ride to the Amalfi if the weather is sunny and have lunch, or a boat to Ischia if the weather isn't windy and soak your foot in a hot spring.

I don't think you should risk Naples with a bad foot, because the pace of walking and dodging traffic makes it a problem.

But were it me, I would look for someplace that is an easy plane flight. Do you have any interest in Milan? Great tram system. Good food. Bologna might also work, but usually more in Milan stays open on Sundays.

I too was going to suggest Milan. Much to see and do, great food, and very good public transport. Also, it's flat.

Doing a driving vacation as suggested might be nice if your partner enjoys driving. Renting a car needn't be expensive so long as it is a stick shift.

If you book an agriturismo, try to book one on a paved road with paved access to your apartment or room. If you are hobbling about you don't want to be dealing with unpaved surfaces (and you don't want the car getting stuck in the mud if it's a rainy spring.)

Will have a look at Milan - hadn't considered it before as I'd always thought it was more industrial but will check out some guides.

With a broken foot, I'd think about the Low Countries -- which are generally FLAT!

If after more research you still think Milan is too modern/industrial for your taste, consider compact, medieval Bologna, just a 50 minute fast train ride south. If you can fly into Bologna, even better. In addition to lots of flat sidewalks, covered in porticoes, it has a good public trans and plenty of taxis.
