Day Trips from Venice

What is a good resource for planning day trips from Venice? I'm there for 8 days with my wife and would like to go to Verona, Padua, or points south, but have no idea what I'm doing. any help welcome. Thanks.

Looking at a map of Italy is not a bad start...

There's Verona and Padua that you've mentioned as well as Vicenza, all within an hour or so by train from Venice.

A bit further are Ferrara and Bologna, both on a direct train line, as far as I can recall.

Presumably, all of these places are mentioned in one or another of the Fodor's destination guides. And they've all been mentioned here more than once.

But if you're in Venice for 8 days, I personally would spend at least five of them in Venice and maybe three on day trips.

And if you're madly, truly, deeply in love with Byzantine mosaics, you will try to get to Ravenna. It's not as easy to get to as the other places mentioned but well worth the effort, as one recent poster has pointed out.

Everyone is different, and people thought we were crazy, but we were in Venice for 8 days this past May and did not leave. We could have easily spent another week there.

Two of our 8 days were travel days, so we had 6 full days. We did see the Lagoon Islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello, San Michele (which was beautiful and peaceful) as well as San Giorgio Maggiore.

Spending the 6 days there gave us time to just wander, and shop and eat, and relax, mixing in the sightseeing while not feeling rushed.

Neighbors of ours mentioned 2 towns - Asolo I think is one, the other I don't remember, but he said it started with B, and was right next to Asolo that he thought were beautiful.

Have a great time!

There is nothing like experiencing an evening opera in the open in Verona, and I'm not a huge opera fan. Sitting in the nosebleed section provides a panoramic view of Verona that will be forever etched in my memory. You can continue on to the Lakes regions-all magnificent!

If you go up to "destinations" on this Fodors page and choose Venice, I believe the Fodor's guide includes the entire Veneto area.

You can also type day trips from Venice in the search box above and find many previous threads discussing this subject.

The Brenta Canal trip to see Palladio mansions is a nice day as are the outer islands of Venice-Murano, Burano, Torcello.

I also agree with Wanderer, 8 days will go quickly if you succumb to the pleasures of Venice.

We spent several days in Venice last year and then traveled to Verona, into Austria, Germany, Switzerland, etc. One day we took the Eurostar to Florence and then on to Pisa. Saw the leaning tower, got back on the train to Florence, walked, shopped and ate there and arrived back in Venice at a reasonable hour that evening. So, that is doable.
