Day Trips from Amsterdam: Germany? Transportation?
I'm going to be in Amsterdam for a week in late November. Can anyone recommend some day trips - especially to Germany? We don't want to stay overnight, and would prefer not to travel more than 2-3 hours (one way). We're especially interested in castles, walled cities, old architecture, and festivals/fun events. We'll get our fill of museums in Amsterdam. Also - should we take the train? Or we've thought about just renting a car (on the outskirts of Amsterdam, to avoid driving in Amsterdam as much as possible), and then driving into Germany, exploring small towns, etc. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions to share? Thanks!

One place that is easily reached by train would be Cologne. Not exactly a "small town" but the cathedral which is directly opposite the main rail station is definitely worth seeing IMO.
The trip takes not quite 3 hours one way on ICE services.

There is a castle complete with a moat just outside of Amsterdam, in Muiden, accessible via train &/or bus. You can check out these threads for more info -

I would check about their winter hours with the VVV before you venture out there. Have fun and enjoy Amsterdam and ALL it has to offer. >-

Although not in Germany, but close to the German border is Maastricht. It is a great city with a lot of history and flavor. You might consider Aachen, which is a German city that borders Belgium. My personal preference is to travel by train and you can get to Cologne in about three hours on a high speed train. (less for Aachen) I think Cologne deserves more than a half-day, but you would love the Cathedral and the beer.
