I think the AVEs are only 2:20-2:30 hours one-way, so that's more like a total of five hours in transit. For a day trip, that makes a difference. I think it would be worth it if you don't think there is any other chance you will see Seville some other way when you can spend more time. I have taken day trips that took 2:30 each way, and never regretted it. Seville is a nice city to see -- if this is your only time in Madrid and you've never been there or around there before, I don't think I would, though.

I too think Seville is a beautiful city, but for the amount of time it will take you to get there and back and the little time you'll spend, IMO it's not worth it. I think you'd be much better off going on a daytrip to either Segovia or Toledo from Madrid--both of which are also very beautiful and much, much closer.

If you absolutely feel you must see it then the AVE 2.5 hour trip each way is perhaps worth it.
Unlike many here, I think the MAIN site in Seville, other than the general architecture in some parts of the city, is the cathedral and that can be done in a long day from Madrid.

I am with intrepid1 in this one. Sevilla is well worth more days, but if you really want to see it, a day trip with the AVE is easily done (specially if you plan thoroughly the places to visit).
Two friends of mine did it last Easter on Good Friday. They left Madrid on the 7:00 am train, arriving into Sevilla at 9:30 am, and they came back in the 21:00 train, arriving to Madrid at 23:30. It gave them plenty of time to see some of the processions, visit the cathedral, Santa Cruz, have lunch in some place in Triana ... They knew beforehand what they wanted to do, and everything went perfect.
I have been thinking of doing it in reverse next year, for Easter. Leaving in the late AVE from Madrid, spend the night there watching some of the processions, and return home in the morning.

Been there! Done that! Left Madrid at 07:30 on Viernes de Semana Santa and arrived Sevilla Santa Justa 10:00
We caught a bus over to el Portal de la Macarena where we were able to see the Procession returning to the Basilica. We had lunch and spent the afternoon touring; caught AVE at 20:00 back to Madrid, arriving 22:30.
We got a nice discount (25%) for same day return.
But like the other people say: 3-days is barely enough for just Madrid! If you do a daytrip to Toledo or Segovia you won't have time for the Sevilla trip (even if you fly there).

there is so much to see outside madrid if you feel like leaving the city.. but if you MUST go to sevilla, just take the 30 euro carriage ride and that will give you a fun, quaint city tour of all the highlights.
then you can go back to wherever appeals most to you..
go for coffee break at alfonso XIII hotel, lunch at the cooking school( will give name later.. ) and take in a museum and cathedral.
intense, but fun if weather on top of it is gentle to you.

I'll chime in here re Madrid, also. There are some who don;t particularly care for Madrid but I personally think that it, alone can be worth several days in and of itself. This depends, of course, on what your main interests are but if those include art/museums there will be plenty to choose from on that score alone.

You have it backwards. You should be spending 3 1/2 days in Deville with a day trip to Madrid. Come to think of it, you could then take a dat trip to Jerez, Cordoba or Ronda, which would be time better spent than Madrid.
