cruise civitavecchia

Our Royal Carribean cruise lands in Civitavecchia, Italy, one& half hours from Rome,Italy. We have been to Rome and would just like to get off the ship and get to Rome quickly & inexpensively. Is this feasible? Is public transportation easy to access?

The train station is about 10min from the cruise ship port. As you've already stated it'll take you about 1 1/2 hrs to get to Rome.

Most of the trains on this route are the slow R trains and will cost 7€. To see the prices for these trains on Trenitalia, you must enter a date within 7 days. No need to buy in advance as there are no discounts and they don't sell out.

Thanks so much. I really find train schedules mind boggling, but I figure I can do this.

Heally - follow the crowds walking from the port gate to the train station. I would buy a BIRG ticket for 12€ ON MY WAY to the train station (at a Tabacchi store or similar) to avoid the long lines at the train station. It's good for travel to and back from Rome - and public transport in the city for that one day! You might read these two articles on visiting Rome from Civitavecchia; plenty of pictures and maps - Good Luck!

That's a good deal if you are returning to Civitavecchia. Is the BIRG ticket only good for the R trains?

My info above is wrong. The R trains are 5€. IC trains 10€, AV trains 14.50€. Be sure to validate R tickets before boarding.

I cannot believe how helpful this info is. The two sites mentioned by rineurope are so detailed. I vaguely remember the train validation machines and of course confusing train timetables, these articles explain everything.

I believe you disembard the ship, exit the port, turn right and it's almost a direct route to the train station. Or follow the crowds as the station is the only place to go.

Kybourbon: yes, the BIRG ticket is good only on Regionale trains in 2nd class. Civitavecchia is in Zone 5 (the ATAC system extends in Rome out to the zone 2 area). If you're headed all the way to Roma Termini on the Regionale trains, they would run you 5,00€; but if you plan on getting off at Roma Trastevere or Roma Ostiense, it's only 4,60€ (until they raise prices again!).

I've only been on the Regionale trains to'from Vivitavecchia as the IC's run so infrequently that I've never been able to time my departures (We primarily did the ferry runs to Sardinia).
