Cipriani, Danieli, or Monaco & Grand?

Hello to all my friends who have been so helpful as I plan out our 30th anniversary trip!
We're two weeks away, and I'm deciding on restaurants in Venice. We'll be staying at the Hotel Flora, which is quite near to San Marco. We'd like to have a magical ending to our trip and want to celebrate with dinner at one of the best restaurants.
We've eaten at the Danieli before, overlooking the Grand Canal, and it was lovely, but we'd like to try another place. I went to the Cipriani website, and I have read other posts about restaurants. Most people seem to love it, but in looking at the map, it seems like we'll need to tack on another $100 for a water taxi both ways. Since we really don't want to spend much more than 250Euros, that would probably be too much.

BTW, is that figure even realistic?

I also visited the Monaco & Grand website; it looks wonderful, but no menu. Does anyone know what the menu is like and how much a "typical" dinner with wine would cost?

I also went to the Quadri website. It appears to be all indoor seating, and we'd love to be outside.

Am I missing any great restaurants? Should I plan on spending more? Since this will be our most magical night, I'd really appreciate your opinions--thanks in advance!

Not sure why you are confining your search to hotel restaurants; most of the most highly regarded places to eat in the city are not in hotels. Do you need someplace really formal or just want terrific food in a Venetian atmosphere, be it casual or elegant? Try checking out DaFiore, for example, or Al Covo. You could probably get out for not too much more than that at either place provided your tastes in wine are not too refined.

If you like fish you could consider Corte Sconta. Not plush (but not cheap). Part of the fun is finding it. And, if the weather cooperates, eating in the courtyard. If you mention your anniversary I'm sure they'd respond positively.. we've been treated well every time (about 6) we've been there.

Thanks for your replies. I did look into Corte Sconta, but my guide book says that they are closed from July 15-Aug 15, and we'll be there then.
I read some negative reviews on Al Covo, saying that service was arrogant, etc.

The only reason I was choosing hotel restaurants (which I usually avoid!) was because they seemed to offer the best view and most elegant setting and we wanted one really spectaclar dinner...

...not to mention that I could probably find them, which seems to be the biggest challenge to La Zucca.

I'm also considering Bancogiro for another night, but I was wondering if there is an odor of fish, since it's close to the fish market.

Does anyone know of another elegant restaurant with a view in Venice, or can you tell me anything about these?

The Cipriani has its own free boat service to take guests of the hotel and the restaurant across the lagoon from Piazzetta San Marco.

Sorry to hear Corte Sconta is closed. We've also been to Al Covo based on many raves... but, for some reason, it just didn't connect. Maybe we were there on a bad nite.

We've stayed at the Metropole Hotel.. a sister hotel of the Monaco. And I was thinking that we might try the Monaco next time.. based on location and the nice reivews of its restaurant... As I recall it does have canal views. In any event.... hope you will have a wonderful time!

Thanks, shellio for the tip on the boat service. That would help with the cost.

Grandma, the Monaco looks lovely on the website...can't wait to see for ourselves!

Such pleasant decisions!

Try Ai Gondolieri..great tasting menu but no fish. Or Alle Testiere. Or Da Fiore for a real blowout. We also loved Fiaschetteria Toscana. You can find anyplace in Venice with a good map. All of these places are well-known and anyone can point the way to you if you ask.

Thanks, LoveItaly,
Have you eaten at the Monaco? I'm interested to know how expensive it was and if it was as wonderful as it looks!

ekscrunchy,
I went to the DaFiore website, and it looks like a small building--is there outside seating? It looked quaint, but I'm surprised that it's a blowout! What is special about it?

Eating on the outdoor terrace of the Monaco is lovely. There's better food to be had in Venice but the setting is really memorable. I like Corte Sconta, although I've switched my favorite restaurant to alle Testiere, but it's not at all romantic. When we were there last year it was full of tour groups. The prices at the restaurant at the Monaco, prior to the big remodel, were expensive but not ridiculous. It's a gorgeous place to spend a special evening.

Marija, thanks for the tips on the Monaco. I would really like to go there. Do you remember how much you spent?

I'd guess you can have dinner for two there for 250E if you watch what you drink. Make sure you ask for a table outside at the water's edge, since those are the best tables. I don't remember what we spent, but it wouldn't be of much help for establishing current prices. You can always go down to the hotel and take a look at the menu and prices. Another outdoor place with great views is Harry's Dolce on the Giudecca. It's our favorite place for Sunday lunches, if you exclude the Locanda Cipriani. That would certainly meet your budget. I hope you have a wonderful anniversary dinner wherever you decide to go!

Thank you, Marija,
I'm sure we can't go wrong at any of these! I have asked the hotel to book us a table at the Monaco, but I think we'll walk by earlier to see the menu.
I also reserved at the Cipriani Fortuny Terrace; have you eaten there? I have not been able to get any idea of the cost yet.
Do you recommend the Locanda over the Cipriani Fortuny Terrace? Since it's on Burano, I thought it would be too far from the San Marco area where we are staying.
Any tips are greatly appreciated!

The Locanda Cipriani is a great lunch place, since it's in a beautiful garden overlooking Torcello's old cathedral. I wouldn't go there for dinner unless I was staying there.

We've never been to the Cipriani Fortuny Terrace. Harry's Dolce is also on the Giudecca where the Cipriani is located. We always take a vaporetto to Harry's Dolce, no need for a water taxi. Harry's has wonderful outdoor dining, right on the water's edge. It's fun to watch the cruise ships go by. We've never had dinner there, only lunch. The time we were going for dinner, it started to rain so we cancelled our reservations. Again, the food is not noteworthy but the setting is.

Hello cybertraveler

My husband and I are just about three weeks out(barely), from our 26th anniversary celebration, and we also booked the Cipriani Fortuny Terrace. I did a lot of research and found the menu to be really good. If you go to their website, the menu for the main dining room and the terrace is supposed to be the same. The view is supposed to be awesome. Their own water taxi will take you right to the hotel, so no getting lost. We figured it would give us a different panoramic view of the city. If you do go, have a wonderful time. I am sure we both will!!

Hello, parislady,
Thanks for your post-we may be there on the same night-we're just about 3 weeks away from the Venice portion of our trip, too. Congratulations on your 26th!Isn't it fun to celebrate?

I went back to the website, but I can't get to any menus. However the pictures confirmed my decision to go there--wish I could stay there! How do you get to the menus?
Do you think we can go early and walk around the grounds? It looks spectacular!

Marija, Thanks again for the info on Harry's Dolce. It sounds like a great side trip.

I think I already need to start planning my next trip!

Hello cybertraveler, I just saw your question to me so I am sorry for not answering sooner. The restuarant at the Hotel Monaco has a beautiful tableside seating along the Grand Canal of course but personally I would never bother going back there. Very expensive (although I do not remember the exact cost). Personally, I do not find many restaurants in Venice to serve fantastic food. I do love the food in other parts of Veneto but I have never considered Venice a city I would go to for the food. And due to the amount of toursit that Venice entertains I always have thought that their restaurants are overpriced. I have enjoyed the Alla Madonna (across the Rialto Bridge) and believe it or not I have had some great meals at Harry's Bar which is very expensive, but think that we received a bit more attention then most visitor's as Enrico really liked my husband.

Whereever you eat, and wherever you visit,, I wish you a joyous and happy time.
