My hubby and I won some free tickets to Europe. We have been wanting to go to the Cinque Terre for a few years and are considering using the tickets to the CT at the end of April or first part of May. My main concern is the condition of the trails. Can anyone give me some insight on the progress?

Go to Rick Steves website...he has a link to regular updates on the Cinque Terre recovery. We are going in May and planning to stay in Monterosa. From everything I have read the recovery is coming along but Vernazza may not be ready by spring.

Last year, the trails were closed in May, which had nothing to do with the October floods You can never be sure the trails will be open in le Cinque Terre. Even without massive flooding, normal spring rains can close them.

I really hope most of the trails are open (at least those not damaged by the floods) since that is the main reason we want to visit the Cinque Terre.

There are other hikes in the area, including beautiful hikes between Portovenere and Tellaro (above Lerici) and around Portofino. However, if it is very rainy spring on the Italian Riviera, hikes are not always possible.

You should follow the weather up until the time of your trip. If you book accommodations on the Riviera, don't book them unless they have a cancellation policy.

There are a number of websites following the progress of repairs in le Cinque Terre (Little Paradiso, SaveVernazza) and some residents of the area post on Tripadvisor. I think Rick Steves' website might be doing regular updates as well.
