Chartres Tour with Malcolm Miller

I will be in Paris mid-late Sept. I've read about the great tours that Miller gives at the Chartres Cathedral. I have searched the net but cannot find out if I need to book in advance, prices etc. Does anyone know the details on getting on these tours?
All you need to do is show up at the cathedral at noon or 2:45 pm. You pay Mr. Miller, or one of his associates if he's not there, 40 francs in cash. The tour takes about an hour. Many people do both tours, as he "reads" different windows each time.

Janet: My wife and I did Malcolm's tour last year in November. We didn't book in advance, knew nothing about it until we got there. We just saw a sign that said there was a tour at a certain time. It wasn't over-organized. So we waited with a few other people and it was no problem. However, it was a miserable, grey and cold day. I remember the cold seeping up through the stone floor. So maybe that kept people away. My guess is that you won't be able to book in advance. And the sign did say that there was a maximum number of people per tour (a number our group never reached). I wish I could remember more specifics, e.g., the times of the tours. I think the cost was about the equivalent of five or six dollars.

By the way, the tour WAS great, despite the cold. Mr. Miller is quite a character (my wife and still do our Malcolm Miller imitations to this day), and as knowledgeable as you might expect for someone who has spent decades studying one thing. Definitely worth doing. Wish I could be more help. Enjoy.

No charge in June 2000 when we were there. Great tours; one in the morning and one in the afternoon, covering different aspects of the Cathedral. Don't sneeze or cough (or for heaven's sake bring your fretful baby along) because he'll throw you out on your ear. I saw it happen!

I arrived in Chartres and proceeded to the hotel my tour group was to meet at. They were late so I just wnadered over to the cathedral. What luck, the tour was just starting. It was facinating. Came back later in the day for the other tour. He asked who had attended the morning tour, and the tours the day before and then customized the tour to have as little duplication as possible.

Before going, do check to make sure Malcolm will be in residence at that time. To do so, you'll need to fax him and he generally responds quickly if he's in town. I can get you the fax number if necessary, but you might want to search on "Malcolm Miller" in Google Newsgroupos first. Malcolm tends to spend his summers in Chartres and then gives lectures in other parts of the world in the off season. The "tour" referred to is actually a concentrated "lecture" about some facet of Chartres cathedral so don't expect to be doing a lot of moving while there. Just show up on time and prepare to enjoy the knowledge of the world's greatest expert on this cathedral.
