I'm not certain of the opening times as I've never been, but just wanted to let you know that there are two casinos in Venice (well, one from what I understand, but it operates in different areas of Venice depending on the season).

In the summer the casino operates on the Lido, and in the winter it is in the Cannaregio area (San Marcuola vaporetto stop).

I stayed literally around the corner from the one in Cannaregio last fall and I honestly didn't notice any traffic in or out during the day, but there was plenty at night.

Maybe someone else can help you with more details, but I just wanted you to know that there are two areas they operate in during different seasons. Also, you will need your passport to enter, from what I have read.

fpsoley-Good question! Statia and I like to stay in the area of Venice-Cannaregio-where the Casino is located, (the palazzo housing the Casino is called CA' VENDRAMIN-CALERGI) and is where the composer Richard Wagner lived and died while composing the opera Parsifal.

Statia was staying around the corner from the Casino, and my apartment was but a two minute walk down from the Casino.

Like Statia, I was under the impression that the Venice Casino did not operate during the summer in Venice-soooo this last August I was walking past it, when I decided to go and find out what was up here. I went in during the day (they were open) and asked the very pleasant young woman at the door whether it was open, did it operate in the summer, etc.

Well, it IS open during the summer, unlike what Statia and I both believed-the lady told me that it is open on the Lido IN ADDITION TO their location in Venice/Cannaregio. I was surprised, and advised her that a lot of people believe it isn't open during the summer, but no, it is. Here's the website where you can get all the details:

www.casinovenezia.it/ing/cavendra.htm

The casino is open for slots at 11:00-until 3:00am!) table games open at 3:00pm. The dress is "dressy casual"-it's a quite grand palazzo, so you need to look presentable, jacket required for men (although I saw some Chinese dudes walk in dressed in old khakis and golf shirts, without a jacket, and no one said a word to them).

There is an elegant "Wagner Restaurant" serving Venetian cuisine until 12:30am, in addition to a snack bar.

I overheard a Canadian man at the train station say that he had won a couple of grand the night before at the Casino-so, for those who think there's nothing to do in Venice at night, here is yet another option-until the wee hours of the morning.

Thanks for the updated info, Girlsyptravel. DH and I are not big gamblers (especially considering he was raised in Vegas and around it all the time), but it's nice to know the casino locations and seasons for future info.

Especially in order to provide the correct info in the future to others.

BTW - Your comment about something to do until the wee hours is correct. As DH and I departed our apartment for home at 5 a.m. we were surprised to see people still leaving the casino at that time. Oh my....

Hi Statia-I'm going to top this thread once more-I do hope this time that fpsoley will look on the board and read the responses!

You know I love casinos, but I was always doing something else at night, so I never spent any time there, or I was too tired-I do want to go over there and do some gaming- as it is a very elegant palazzo, and hopefully, I can see Wagner's living quarters-as he was given a whole floor to live on while composing his opera (and he died there as well-wonder if he haunts the place?)
