Better to go to Pompeii from Naples or Sorrento?.

We are staying in Positano for 5 nights, but want to see Pompeii. We can't decide whether it is better to go to Pompeii for a day from Sorrento, or wait til we get back to Naples, and take the train to Pompeii for a day. It looks like Pompeii is much closer to Naples, but I keep hearing that people should see Pompeii from Sorrento. And we will have one whole day in Naples, which everyone says we don't need to see. Advise please.
Thanks, Barb

The local train from Sorrento leaves you very close to the main gate in Pompeii. Trip time is about 30 min. I think you can also take a local train to Pompeii from Naples. We took a cab because of limited time and it took us about 30 minutes and cost E 35 one way.

We loved Naples, and would encourage you to spend at least one day visiting the main sites, and simply strolling along the waterfront. Great city, with many places to explore! And I haven't even mentioned the amazing pizzerias!

I would do it from Sorrento if all things are equal, because the station in Sorrento is a postage stamp set in a cute little urban cul de sac with pretty flowers, and the train station in Naples is a maelstrom.

It makes no difference. The train is the Circumvesuviana and it goes from Naples to Sorrento which is the end of the line. Go from whichever is more convenient for other reasons.

The Circumvesuviana goes from it's own platform below the main station in Naples. It even has it's own ticket window and there was no line at all when I bought my ticket. No maelstrom involved.

Pompeii is the same distance from Sorrento and from Naples - 30 minutes from each location. I agree with dfourh about the Sorrento train station compared to Naples but it depends on how long it will take you to get to Sorrento from Positano and how early you can get to the site and have enough time to visit. I think it will make for a long day from Positano.

That's a good thought: are you spending any time in Sorrento, or simply going Positano > Sorrento > Pompeii > Positano? That is a long day.

Another possibility, assuming you are going straight from Positano to Naples, is to visit Pompeii on the way. You can invest in a driver who will hold your luggage, or take public transport and leave your luggage at left luggage.

I think it depends on how you are getting to Naples.

Keep in mind, if you decide to use the train, the Circumvesuviana is primarily a commuter train and can be very crowded at those times of the day. With luggage it's not particularly comfortable and especially so if you don't have a seat. If you'll be staying in Sorrento, the best possible plan is to take the train from there and return overnight so you don't have to contend with luggage and the train as well as a long day at Pompeii. Give your self a break and reserve a day for Pompeii without also moving with luggage from one place to another. It could be done also from Naples if you choose. Set out after the morning commute and return before or after the afternoon/evening commute.

Thanks for all the responses. Either way we go we will not have luggage, so that isn't an issue. Does anyone know how long it takes to get from Positano to Sorrento? I'm also assuming that is by bus.? We are early birds, so we can probably get to Sorrento early, and then go to Pompeii.

And we would like to spend one day in Naples, just keep hearing bad things about Naples.
Any other suggestions.

"We are early birds, so we can probably get to Sorrento early, and then go to Pompeii."

These are the commuters to which I referred in the previous post, residents of Sorrento who commute to Naples and environs. The train is not a comfy one and especially not when it's packed and you have no seat. Mid morning is better than early. Maybe stop for breakfast in Sorrento then continue on, unless it's the weekend.

From Sorrento is most direct imo. If you leave early from Positano, you will "beat" the one hour time. If weather is hot, do get to Pompeii as early as poss. to beat the heat.

>>>Positano to Sorrento is an hour:<<<

You shouldn't need to go all the way to Sorrento. Take the bus from Positano to Meta (make sure your bus stops there as not all do). It's 35 minutes from Positano to Meta and Meta is closer to Pompeii than Sorrento (20 minutes vs 30 minutes unless you take the express train which costs a lot more). Catch the Circumvesuviana at the Meta train station. Scroll down to the schedules that include Positano and Meta. This schedule might not be current so check closer to travel time.
