Define "best." Fastest, cheapest, easiest, most scenic...? Also, from Rome or from the airport?

In October, train from Rome to Salerno, then ferry from Salerno to Positano.

There are no ferries running in November, so then it is the combination of trains, buses and/or private driver.

The BEST way is a private driver from Rome. The next best is a private driver from Naples. After that, trains buses and ferries, as you will.

I second what Fra Diavolo suggests. For us, train from Roma to Napoli and private car transfer from Napoli to Positano was excellent.

In November be prepared for many hotels and restaurants to be closed since it;s the off season. Ferries don't run on some routes at all. If the sea is calm you can still get to Capri from Sorrento - but not sure what there is to do in a beach resort in the chill and rain which are fairly likely.

Hi jan,

>In October, train from Rome to Salerno, then ferry from Salerno to Positano.

Ditto.

More room on the ferry. Much more scenic.

BTW, we stayed in Praiano at www.lesirene.com. You might wish to look into it.
