best things to see in Corfu?
We'll have just 5 hours on a cruise stop. Thinking maybe just to stroll around town, enjoy all it has to offer. Yet, I suspect the island has other interesting/handsome parts. Wondering which excursion might be worth taking. This will be end of September. Thank you.

Corfu has a lot to offer, but with just 5 hours, you could barely begin to scratch the surface, so I would probably plump for staying in the Town.
You can easily spend 5 hours wandering around the maze of narrow streets in the old town, taking a look at the market, maybe paying a visit to the Old Fort and spending an hour or so enjoying a drink and a light meal whilst watching the world go by from underneath the arches on the Liston.

You will easily (really easily) eat up 5 hours strolling around wonderful Corfu Town. There is the New and Old Fortress...which are great. Even without those two though....there are a ton of great streets full of excellent shopping, cafes, restaurants. Lots of photo taking opportunities. Corfu town is one of my favorites.
Have fun!

Thanks so very much for those two good and prompt replies. They make me realize that I neglected to give an impt detail about ourselves. We have no interest at all in shopping (and will have just had lunch on the ship, so no desire to do the cafe thing). We do love to explore interesting streets and alleyways (so long as they're not full of shops) and we do enjoy seeing interesting old buildings. And of course seeing great views.
Btw, one of the ship excursions goes to a palace and one to a monastery-- not both in same tour. And if one does those tours, one gets some time in town, but not much. The point would be to see a bit of the rest of the island. I'm leaning towards staying in town, in part, in fact, to save the money that I'd be spending on an excursion. That is, if town wasn't very interesting, and if other parts of the island were, I'd be happy to spend the money on the tour.
Thank you.

We found Corfu Town well worth a day, and we're not shoppers, either. We did a historical self-guided walking tour, and took a break mid-walk by getting on the little trolley that looks like a train and takes you to places too far for walking, including a 1000 year old church.

I imagine the palace will either be the Achilleon or Mon Repos and the monastery is probably the one on Mouse Island. Here are a couple of links with info which might help you to decide whether you want to take the tours or stay in town -

We had about 8-9 hours on our cruise in Corfu. We along with another couple hired a cab and driver for a tour of the island (there will be lots of them waiting when you get off the ship) and it was the best thing we did. He was excellent, spoke very good English, and gave us a very nice 5 hour or so tour. The real plus was he was able to take us in places we would never have found ourselves. An example was a private monastery up in the hills where he knew the monks and we were able to go into the interior and see the olive presses, the chapel, etc. We paid a total of 100 Euros for this (50 per couple ) and it was worth every cent. We then walked around town, had a late lunch and drinks and shopped a bit.
You can bargain with the drivers, but 100 Euro was the best rate we got, but for the amount of time and the private access he provided it was worth it.
