best neighborhood/area to stay in rome?

Hi, never been to Rome and looking for hotels/apartments but don't have a clue which neighborhoods are best. looking for a combination of centrally located and walkable to things with good local eateries (not too touristy).

Thank you in advance for your suggestions

Lauren:
When I have questions about accommodations or neighborhoods in Rome, I look at RonInRome.com.
Ron's an Atlanta based travel planner/agent that used to live in Rome, and he has the city fully documented in every way.
I found taxi's to be expensive, but the buses will carry you promptly and efficiently anywhere you need to go.
It's a city that's too easy to walk your self to death in.

Many neighborhoods that are centrally located will be touristy, for that very reason. Two of my favorite neighborhoods in Rome are the historical center (Pantheon area) and Campo dei Fiori.

If you post your budget and dates, we can help you narrow down some choices.

WWK- Thanks! Dates are going to be July 1-4(ish). I looked at the campo dei fiori area looks adorable and very central, less touristy than most of the centre. right?
I also read that Teastaccio is very untouristy and has a lot of great trattorias and bakeries, etc, and also less expensive. Is Trastavere a nice neighborhood? I found many apartments for rent in our range of $100-120 a night in all of those areas. I am going to probably stay in one of these 3 areas.

Bamaman,

Thanks! I will check out that website first thing tomorrow!!

Stay as close to the centre as possible. Once you get out of the centre, the public transport is fairly poor. Trastevere is a lovely area. Beware of the no 64 bus which is also nicknamed 'the pickpocket express'. It crosses Rome from the main train station to the Vatican but you do need to have your wits about you and a very firm hand on your belongings.

When I stayed in Rome I stayed walking distance to the Vatican. The hotel was called the Atlante Garden hotel. It was lovely, and there was a market nearby where we bought fresh fruit cheap.

We live the trastevere area and would highly recommend it. Try to get as close to the river as possible so it's an easy walk to the very core of centre...
