Best City for Food in France

Hi All! I just got back from a trip to Lyon, and was amazed at how good the food was. It is the culinary capital of the country, and had everything from markets to bouchons (traditional casual restaurants) and Michelin-starred cuisine. I spent four days exploring the city, which is beautiful, and eating my way through some of its best restaurants. I highly recommend it as a travel destination!

I wrote about it and posted photos on my blog if you want to read more: http://www.aladyinlondon.com/2013/06...ts-hotels.html

Brava! What a great report, and how nice that you covered everything from the simple to the fine cuisine.

We just did the TGV from Barcelona to Paris, and I loved it. SO glad we chose not to fly. It was so relaxing, and while we didn't partake of the cafe car, we did bring our own picnic, which looked a lot like your rustic lunch!

Great blog, btw. I've been on it before, but made a point to bookmark it this time.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks YankyGal! I'm glad you enjoyed the blog post, and I appreciate the bookmark! That's great that you took the train from Barcelona to Paris. I have always wanted to do that. Train travel is such a relaxing, scenic way to go!

Lyon has always been known as the food capital of France if you are interested only in traditional French food. It is therefore highly recommended to people who are deprived of the traditional French dishes where they live but it is rather exasperating for a lot of us Parisians who love ethnic foods.

That is true about the food being mostly traditional French, kerouac. I appreciated that fact given that I'm from London, where we have a lot of international cuisine as well. I always like eating "local" when I travel to experience the best of what a country, region, or city has to offer, and I felt like Lyon was perfect for that. I can see how you would feel otherwise being in Paris, though!

Mamaw - thanks! I'm glad you liked it!

I seem to recall one of our profs saying when I was recently studying in France, that Lyon was one of two cities (I forget which the other was) being considered to be the venue of a new National Culinary Museum or Hall of Fame. Don't know which city was awarded the honour if it's been done already, but your wonderful report would certainly seem to support Lyon's claim for it.

A wonderful report and thank you for sharing. As a food enthusiast myself, I've bookmarked your well written and colourful blog as well.
