We are going on a cruise out of Copenhagen and want to stopover in London. Could you advise the best area to stay in London for getting a tour and being able to walk around to see some sights on foot. Also what is the best form of transportation from/to Heathrow.

Also any recommendations for hotels in Copenhagen? I am going to use priceline for both places but would like to know about the areas. We will have two days prior to the cruise. Thanks for any help.

The best form of transfer from Heathrow would be taking the Heathrow express, which only takes about 15 mins to central London.

The subway system is very efficient in London, so nothing is too far in central London.

I would stay in the Mayfair area, which is half way between the West end and Westminster and knightsbridge. It's also right next to the Hyde park and is very close to mid-range shopping in Oxford street, and designer boutiques at Bond street. I think it's the most central neighborhood.

As for Copenhagen, I've been there once and stayed at the Marriott, which was the closest hotel to the train station and right next to Tivoli Park. It's about 15 min walk to the main pedestrian zone of Copenhagen. It's a nice 4 star hotel.

You didn't mention your budget though, but the five star hotel with the best location would hotel d'angeterre. A nice three star hotel in a great location would be 71 Nyhavn.

In Copenhagen I stayed at the hotel THE SQUARE. It was a great location on the city hall plaza. It was not terribly expensive. I would stay there again

BTW, there is also a high speed train from the Copenhagen airport to the city that you could take, which is faster and cheaper than taking a taxi.

We've stayed at the Marriott twice and appreciated the location re the main rail station and Tivoli; other sites aren't that far a walk.

I would look at all the reviews on TripAdvisor before making any decisions.

Thanks for the responses so far. One problem is that we will have our suitcases with us as we will be doing 3 weeks of cruising. Can you take suitcases on high speed train in Copenhagen and the Heathrow Express? We are looking for about a 3 star hotel - something nice but we don't need really fancy. I was going to use Priceline but the problem is that I am going with my freind (something we have planned on doing since we were in grade school) so we need two beds. You don't get the opportunity to choose the bed configuration on Priceline so I appreciate all of your input.

Of course, you can take suitcases on any type of train - just place them in the aisles (they might be to heavy/large for the overhead compartments).

Copenhagen: Any location in the inner city is fine. Sorry, I do not know 3-star-hotels there.

But in any case, both for London and Copenhagen, check www.hrs.com. It has good rates and displays a lot of information about the hotels, including distance from city center, photos and maps.

In London, you can't beat the location of the Premier Inn County Hall or if you want more luxury, the Marriott County Hall at the other end of the building. These hotels are within walking distance of Westminster Abbey, Churchill's Underground War Rooms, Trafalgar Square, and more.

Thanks traveller1959 - that is a great website. With all of the internet travel websites I have visited and used I hadn't heard about this one. I have found several great hotels that will be perfect for us.

For 3-star in Copenhagen I second the recommendation of The Square. Close distance to main station, Tivoli just around the corner, Radhuspladsen and the beginning (or end) of Stroeget right across it.
Hotel has nice modern uncluttered design and for my liking just great (not much of a view to put it mildly from some of the rooms, but you're smack dab in the center of town and the whole package is a winner in my book.

In Copenhagen, if I could get a good price, I would book the Marriott ahead of any other hotel, except for the d'Angleterre. It is just a much nicer hotel, and the quality of the rooms makes up for a slightly lesser location.

Other nicer hotels in good areas would be the Admiral and the Front Hotel.

From a hotel perspective, I know many who like the Adina, near the cruise terminal. It is a little further away, but the rooms are studio-style and have kitchenettes.

Re: the Marriott.

Lovely hotel. But last time I tried to make a reservation, the asking price was around $450/night (in Sept!!!).

Radisson and Scandic also have a few centrally-located hotels.

For Copenhagen, I think Hotel 27 is perfectly located. I stayed there before it was renovated and become a hip boutique hotel, so can't comment on its current condition.

If you use Priceline, and succeed (not a given during cruise season), the Marriott is the most likely 4* option.

For London, the most central Priceline zone is Mayfair-Soho - and also the most expensive generally.
