Berlin Retsaurants-not traditional German food

I already know about traditional German restaurants. I am seeking great Thai, Japanese and other International cuisine in Berlin.

I recommend a simple restaurant called Hong Kong Express for good Thai/Vietnamese food and sushi. It is located about 2 blocks past the Berliner Dom walking towards Alexander Platz. It is in a small pedestrian mall with other shops and cafes.

It's great if you are staying in East Berlin or are sightseeing in the vicinity.

Most of the entress are between 10 and 14 euros. The duck with vietnam noodles in red curry peanut sauce was fantastic.

You should also not miss out on Turkish food, which might be more emblematic of Berlin than any "German" food.

Hello,
We had the most wonderful Mexican food, I dare say even better than the Mission District in San Francisco, in Mitte Berlin!

This restaurant is quiet, not much action, but oh so tasty. Like really, really good, and my friend was really adverse to us going in as he said trying foreign cuisine in a foreign foreign land was not wise. He ate his words.

The vegitarian tacos and cheese enchiladas were fantastic, as were the nachos. My friend and I both ordered non-meat dinners so cannot vouch for the carnivore dinners, but if it's anything like the cuisine we ate, I'd say go for it.

A word of advice though, only go here when you have plenty of time, they lagged and we got the rest of our order to go, they still took time to prepare it, but were we pleasantly surprised!

It's Restaurant Maya, at 27 Weinbergsweg, Mitte, Berlin. Right near the Rosenthaler Platz metro station.

Enjoy!!

This is an odd question for Berlin but someone else had asked me before so I kept my eyes open the last time I went to Berlin. Unfortunately the only Thai food I've ever had in Berlin is inside the Friedrichstrasse S bahn station which was very cheap and good if you're hungry. Since you're probably not going to get much more info on this subject, perhaps I should describe some asian restaurants that I've scanned in my radar but never actually ate there.

One that sticks in my mind in the Mitte is SUSHI CIRCLE on Franzosichestrasse btw Gendarmenmarkt & Friedrichstrasse. Everytime I have lunch nextdoor at Borchardt, I notice how packed the Sushi Circle is with business suits, it's got to be good (and cheap too, I think 7-8 euro for the daily specials on the board in front of the door).

A few people told me that one of the best Thai restaurant in Berlin is MAO THAI in the Prenzlauerberg district www. Maothai.de. They have a simpler branch called SISAKET by Checkpoint Charlie.

For a top vietnamese restaurant, MONSIEUR VUONG on Schoenhauser Allee in Prenzlauerberg is highly recommended by many including hsv, a regular Fodor poster.

"OSTWIND" on Husemannstrasse just north of Kolwitzplatz (Prenzlauerberg) is supposed to be an inexpensive and good chinese restaurant. It looked popular when I passed it after my great 7 euro all you can eat german brunch buffet at "SATURDAY" on the same street.

There is also a very nice looking Indian-Singaporean fusion (not quite Thai) restaurant on Oranienburgerstrasse in Prenzlauerberg toward the corner of Friedrihcstrasse. It's a very attractive indoor outdoor restaurant which some Fodorites have reported to be good. I have wanted to eat there just because it looked like a fun place but had to leave because I just couldn't stand the strong smell of indian curry. We watched a continuous flow of young crowd eating there while we were eating across the street at Lutter & Wegner.

Hope that helps!

"Good Times" is a good Thai restaurant. Located at Hausvogteiplatz (subway station on line 2), one block east of Gendarmenmarkt.

We had a very enjoyable meal at the above-mentioned Mirchi a couple of years ago. We stayed at the Arcotel Velvet right across the street.

For a nice Italian meal (not spaghetti and meatballs), try Cavallino Rosso-Hannoversche Str. 2
tel 030 - 27 90 83 14. It was great two years ago, and I hope it's still as good an overall dining experience today as it was then.
