B&B's

Wife and I (from OZ)are contemplating a bed and breakfast tour of the UK. Can anyone advise approximate cost of these. Standard would be average?? Thanks

It entirely depends on WHERE you are going to be. In London or Edinburgh a nice B&B will cost a lot more than a similar property in remote/rural Scotland or Wales.

Outside of the major cities - middle class B&Bs (not tacky/bath down the hall, nor posh high end) will run about £22-£35-ish per person.

Yes, I second that. Whenever I hit town (make sure it's not to late in the day) I'd call at local Tourist Information Office and ask for a B&B around £23-£25 per person. We always got one, and always of a reasonable standard.

In London it is more expensive, but even there at certain places (The Cardiff, Westpoint, Abbey Court etc, all in Paddington/Hyde Park area) you can get close to the same price range. However the rooms will be smaller, and the bathrooms (at least you'll have your own) about the size of an aeroplane loo.

I have read from Janisi and several others differences of opinion in the pound versus the euro, seems the pound wins out if spending is the issue. Do all venues, B&B's, restaraunts, etc. accept the pound vs the euro?

Are you asking about the UK?? If so - they accept £.

(those debates you have read are re the exchange rates of the $ vs € and $ vs £ and whether the $ has more buying power in euro zone countries or in the UK. Nothing at all to do w/ using € in Britain or £ on the continent)

Hi jimmi --

I stayed in 2 different B&Bs in the Cotswolds this past September. Here is the info from my trip report... hopefully this will help!

Stow-on-the-Wold
Number Nine - £70/night - http://www.number-nine.info/
We had a great experience at this little B&B. The owners, James (Jimmy) and Carol, were incredible. So down to earth, great hosts, and really fun to chat with. We stayed in room 3 (only 1 of 3 total rooms) at the top of the house. It was a good size with a small-ish bathroom, and everything was tidy and comfortable. A taller person would probably have trouble with the shower (low ceilings) but we did just fine. The owners presented us with a perfect full English breakfast each morning. They were also very helpful in assisting us with finding a taxi (as mentioned above). The Number Nine was a very short distance to the main square in Stow, as well.

Chipping Campden
Bramley House - £65/night - http://www.bramleyhouse.co.uk/
Even smaller than our previous B&B, Bramley House has just two rooms for rent. Our room was large and bright and decorated in a pleasing way. It felt fresh and clean. We had a nice view over the back garden, too. The owners, Jane and David, were so welcoming and friendly. Jane is full of helpful information, too, and offered a lot of advice about different walks and restaurants in the area. We were provided a wonderful full English breakfast (again!) each morning, and were also invited to enjoy tea in the front garden one afternoon. Staying with them felt like staying with family. They have their own sheep which we were introduced to, as well. It was a real treat, so we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. A short five minute walk had us on the high street in Chipping Campden.
