Barcelona Tour La Sagrada? Or go it alone?

My husband and I will be in Barcelona October 18, leaving on a cruise on the 21st. Familia La Sagrada is a definite! Are there advantages to taking a tour or are we better off to read up about the sights there and wander on our own? Is there a better time of day to go? If you think a tour is a good idea, please share the name of the company you used and whether a small group tour is a better idea. Thanks to all!

Such an incredible building - I would take a tour to learn the history and the nuances. I took a private tour in 2005; not with a local company. I would also make sure I had enough time after to walk up the spires and also see the exhibit of original drawings in the lower level.

I used both the audio guide and one of the guides available at the Sagrada Familia itself, both booked in advance. IMO, both were excellent and both added immeasurably to my experience. Personally, I wouldn't book anyone off the main Sagrada Familia website.

Whether there is an ideal time depends on how long you are there. For the light from the stained glass windows on the sides, mid-day is not as good as earlier or later.

You can book a tour with a guide (or with an audio guide, or with neither) on the Sagrada Familia website, which is what I did:

I also highly recommend to take the guided tour. Would most probably add immensely to the experience. I thought I knew a lot about both the church and Gaudí before visiting a couple of years ago, but the very knowledgeable guide made of course a huge difference. Took questions and elaborated on details that the audio guide for sure wouldn't tell you ;-)

If you prepurchase an entrance ticket and you miss your allotted time, can you still use the ticket the same day? If you miss it completely that day can you use it the next day?

@ susiesan: I would not count on being able to use the ticket outside the times you choose when you buy it. I could be wrong.

no, you can't use the ticket the same day at any time, that's why it has a time on it. They have alot of crowds and need to regulate that. If you could use it at any time, it wouldn't mean much.
