Problem: Want to carry-on from Vancouver -
LHR and then LGW where I'll have to check-in
my backpack as per the restrictions.

BA website says 'customers departing on flights to the UK from the rest of the world
who are not transferring onto another flight,
will be able to carry one standard-sized bag,
56cm X 45 cm X 25 cm (17.7"X13.7"X6.2&quot and
one briefcase.....' This statement is followed by a 'Please note: customers
transferring through, or then returning from,
the UK must comply with the UK DoT requirements which allows one cabin bag no
bigger than 45cm X 35cm X 16cm.'

Okay. If I carry-on from Vancouver to
London HR and then I am going to Gatwick
to board an Italy flight (which will be
checked) what size(s) of carry-ons am I
allowed from YVR?

Am I being obtuse here? (Probably...) I'm
losing faith in BA/BAA since they are having
a little problem with metric/inches and I'm
losing faith in myself b/c I can't figure
anything out!

my understanding is that on your second flight (out of gatwick) you will have the more strict guidelines and be allowed a carry on no larger than 45x35x16.

I'd pack a lighweight/nylon sholder bag and stuff whatever you need to carry on at gatwick pre check in

sure, that's what I'd say also. that's just normal, that smaller, within-European flights have lower luggage limits.

I think basically you would be allowed the larger carryon for the first segment, but since you wouldn't on the second part, what would you do with it? I think you are saying that you will have to carry the bag to Gatwick and check it yourself, so it doesn't matter about the first leg, perhaps. I'll buy that, I think the tranfers thing is assuming the airline is transferring the bag for you. So, if you just want to make more sure if it getting at least to London so you take it onboard, I would do that, as long as you have time to check the bag at Gatwick.

clearly - I want to know if my cabin
allowance is the old new BA one or the
new new post plot one......56X45X25 +
the briefcase sized OR 45X35X16 only.

Latest rules FROM all UK airports - http://tinyurl.com/raalf and most airlines seem to be allowing you to go overweight with checked luggaged if you have to check your hand luggage

Entering the UK the rules are as before despite what the b*st*rds at Iberia told me.

......Yup, Christina, you managed to
understand my garbled question! IIRC,
you have to pick up your checked bags
at LHR and then re-check them at LGW
- that's what threw me off re the
size variance.
