Autoeurope vs. Kemwel

During my final check on vouchers I decided to check the rates for a 5 day one way rental in Norway by Kemwel. I already have a rental from Autoeurope for $455 without CDW. Kemwel's rate for the same car, same dates is $431. So why not save the $24? I call Autoeurope to see if they will match the price. Sorry, but they do not match the price of their sister company. But I can cancel anytime. So I call Kemwel, and surprise!, I get the same agent on the telephone. Kemwel's provider in Bergen is Hertz, so while its rates are lower, Hertz insists on a one-way drop-off fee of $175, which means that I am staying with Autoeurope with no drop-off fee.

Moral to the story: check and double-check the total cost.

When I went through the same procedure, I didn't even hang up the phone while talking to Will at AutoEurope - he just switched hats and gave me the lower Kemwel rate.

I don;t know if Economycarrentals.com is also in Norway but they also work as a broker. I just used them in France and the rate including all the insurance was amazing compared to both AutoEurope and Kemwell. Service was good and everything worked out fine.

When I first did the research I tried Economy Rentals. If I did not go with them, it is because they either did not offer one-way rentals or it was not the best deal.

Hi M,

>Hertz insists on a one-way drop-off fee of $175,....[via kemwel]....<

That's unusual. I'd call kemwel again. Also try www.sixt.com.

It's rare to get a drop-off charge within a country. I encountered it once when we picked up a car in Biarritz. The Hertz (or whomever) office there was a franchise - not part of the normal Hertz structure. Cars rented from that office had to be physically returned to that office - thus a fee if they had to send someone out to retrieve the car & drive it back. I believe that there is even fine print on the AutoEurope web site proclaming this (if it's still the same situation that it was in about '04).

Ira,

It's the Kemwel agent who did the research for me and checked to see if there was a drop-off fee, and confirmed that there was none with Autoeurope's provider.
