We are two ladies arriving about 6 pm into Athens airport. Been reading about bus and metro but want to be safer than public transportation. Thinking taxi or private transfer to get to out hotel near Lycabettus hill. Recommendations please. Is there a flat rate taxi fee from the airport to hotel? Can we trust the taxi, I've been reading a lot of negative. Thank you.

Yes, there is a flat rate for taxis from airport to downtown, central Athens. We never had any problems with taxis from the airport or in Athens

We've never had difficulty with a taxi to/from the airport and central Athens either. It's been a few years since we were in Athens, but there is a set rate.

The fixed price taxi currently is €38, it covers tolls, luggage charge etc. If u feel like adding a tip on top, 1-2E, fine; Greeks don't necessarily do that.
