Athens before or after Greek isles?

We will be visiting Athens, Rhodes and Santorini next year. I would prefer to go to Athens first, then Rhodes, and save Santorini as our final memory. My only concern is getting back to Athens from Santorini for the flight back to the US if there was bad weather and the flights were delayed or cancelled. It appears that Olympic and Aegean fly small planes (except one Aegean flight, but it is too late to make our flight back), which may be unable to fly in bad weather. Comments please.

Who knows on any given day; how much uncertainty are you comfortable with? We took the chance and flew back from Santorini, then on to LGW, and it worked. The next year we flew from Crete and overnighted in Athens, to be on the safe side.

We stayed a few days in Athens before and after our island visits. Of course, this was some time ago and we weren't really familiar with open jaw type options. You don't say what time of year you are going, but I would think that would have bearing on your decision. Olympic seems to be fine for island hopping, but it would be my most strenuous advice not to take them from the US to Greece nor Greece to US. Long thread on this if you do a search.

Giovanna - We arrive in Athens the first week in June. Do you know what the usual weather conditions for that time period might be? I thought about staying in Athens before and after the islands, but I would prefer not to make two stops there. Incidentally, we are flying Delta round trip US-Greece. I am aware of Olympic's reputation

The good part of staying in Athens on both ends of a trip is a visit to the National Museum. See it before you visit the islands--then the sites on the islands will mean so much more. Then a visit after too--very educational.

We did Athens in the middle..... figured put a little sightseeing in between the relaxation of the islands - We did however miss our connection (Delta flight from athens to JFK) on the way home (due to Olympics incompetance), but delta was able to put us on the air france flight via Paris and we got home only a few hours after we were supposed to.... My advise - leave plenty of time to connect in athens - or spend the night before in Athens.
