We stayed at the Sofitel - you could easily walk across a bridge connecting right to the terminal. You could also easily get a train into the city for sightseeing tho it was a bit of a ride, 30 -45 minutes. Check out the website - usually there are discounts even on rooms that are not prepaid. I think we booked several months out and got a pretty decent rate.

The closest is right at the airport, the Athens Airport Sofitel. It's expensive but extremely convenient. Close by are the St. Thomas B&B and Peri's Hotel. If you're staying in Athens or if you're flying in from the islands they'll pick you up at the airport and also arrange an early-morning taxi transfer back to the airport for you.

As an alternative there is also the Holiday Inn Airport, which is on the airport highway, 10 min drive away from the airport.
They have a shuttle bus too as far as i can remember...
The hotels is less expensive than the Sofitel, but also in the middle of nowhere

WOW! How great to get 3 good replies so quickly. Thank you. I think I'll first check prices for the Sofitel and work down from there if necessary. We will be in Athens so I guess we could take the train to the aiport in the late afternoon before departure.
Is it possible to get to the Holiday Inn Airport using public transportation? If not, then the additional taxi fees will be a deal-breaker in favor of the Sofitel.
Again, thank yoou all so much.

You can take the X 95 bus from Syntagma Square, and get off at the Alpha Channel station, the Holiday Inn is just on the other side of the highway, you only have to cross a bridge.
X95 is the bus connecting the centre of Athens with the Airport

I would do one of two extremes:
Stay at the Sofitel, with only a few minutes walk between hotel check-out and airline check-in desks the next morning. I've stayed there twice before early morning flights, and they have very comfortable beds, walk in showers, swimming pool, etc. It is expensive, but worth it IMO.
Have a late evening in Athens, then go out to the airport and sit in the departure lounge until its time to check in for your flight. Since you have a 6 am departure, you will have to check in around 4 am. There are coffee bars and restaurants open all night in the terminal, and even a little museum. You could also walk over the the bar and restaurant in Sofitel, which is open to non-guests.

The Holiday Inn has a shuttle to/from the airport but we didn't find it reliable. And I don't know if it would run at 4 AM. Though it should.
Personally I'd spring for the Sofitel; we stayed at the one at Terminal 5 at Heathrow. The room was very comfortable and the walk over the bridge into the airport was easy. Well, as easy as any walk can be at 5 AM.

Mimar,
The shuttle bus of the Holiday Inn doesn't run that early, but one can take the X95 bus.
The operating hours of the shuttle bus are stated on the hotels website, from 05:30 - 22:00 hrs.

Here is what I have decided to do--I found a GREAT deal on Booking.com for the Hilton in Athens for $117 including taxes.
So I have booked it and we will just take a taxi from Athens to the airport at 3:30ish a.m.
Thanks again for all the responses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
