Are there mosquitoes in Greece?

Do I need to bring bug repellent?

I saw very little wildlife of any kind where we went in Greece. In September I never saw a mosquito in Athens or in the Cyclades (probably the wind would blow them away!).

Sure are; but just to be clear, there are no mozzie borne diseases. The bites just itch. It's only a problem near low lying wet land

Mark, hi there. There certainly are mosquitoes in Greece. But wait till you get there to buy bug repellent...in greek mosquitoes are gnupies pronounced nupies. Bug spray is easy to find if you need it. When I was there I had no problems, but my mom was being eaten alive. It also depends where in Greece you are. We had no problems in Athens but mosquitoes were all over Crete. <BR>Have fun

I've encountered mossies and sundry biting insects in some of more unkempt areas of Greece and her islands. Some have bites that feel more like hypodermic needles than anything natural, very painful and annoying. They are seasonal, you tend not to have much trouble in built up areas and some people seem targeted more than others. Buy a repellant out there if you encounter a problem rather than cluttering your luggage with something you may not need.

Let me say, that this is the dumbest question ever posted on this site, except for the one that brought it to the top.

What's so dumb about it? I think it's a perfectly valid question.

I think the question I would be asking if I was going to Greece would be, are there any horny women in Greece? To hell with the mosquitoes.

Yes, there are mosquitoes, especially on the islands. STRONGLY recommend netting for sleeping. I slept very little due to the bites. Otherwise a GREAT place to vacation!

Why in the world would anyone think this is a dumb question that should be ridiculed? I've lived ub a few places in the United States that did not have a mosquito problem, so it is not silly to ask if Greece is that way. Give Mark a break.
