Are Hair Salons in Paris better than New York salons?

It seems as though there is something very special about getting your hair cut in Paris. I love the idea but was wondering if the salons were really any better than the ones in New York City?
Jean Louis David seems to have a fine salon.
Are there any other recommendations for really great salons and the prices?
How do you "maintain" this cut once back in the States?

The real question is: are any of those salons any better than Howard's barber shop in Mayberry, RFD?
The same thing can be said of Parisians wanting to get their haircut in NY.
Your regular hairstylist- if they're competent and up on trends should be able to maintain any haircut.
Be careful of any language barriers in Paris. Be precise in what you ask for or bring a picture.
There is really not any difference between the best cut in Paris or NY.

I think there IS a difference between a haircut in NY vs. Paris.

In Paris, the stylist worked without wetting my hair and by picking up one tiny lock at a time and snipping at it with very small scissors. She never compared one snipped lock with another. At the end, I had the perfect wash-and-wear haircut. When I have mentioned this technique to people in the US, the only ones familiar with it are people who have had their hair cut in France or by a stylist who learned in France.

Meg, you must not get your hair cut at the right places in New York. You've described the way I always have my hair cut, and I've been to a number of salons in NYC that do it that way.

Any suggestions about widely acknowledged "great" salon?

I saw this post and I had to respond. I had my hair cut and styled at the famed "Alexandre" and it was worth every penny. The gentleman who worked on my hair was very precise and the styling was exquisite. He did a very interesting braid woven (hard to describe)instead of doing a french twist for the evening. I truly felt very elegant. Yes it is pricey but then again I do not spend my money on other things. I say go for it but find a salon that is well known.
