amsterdam

y husband and I will have only 24 hours to spend there in June. We would like to know a reasonable mode of transportation from the airport to the museum district and a reasonable hotel to stay the night in that area as well.

Thanks.

Take the train into town, it takes appx 20 minutes and you can catch a tram to the museum district. (Tram #5, if I remember correctly) It's easy.

We bid on Priceline and landed a NH hotel near the museum. But I don't know what "reasonable" means to you, Priceline was very reasonable for us. The hotel was clean, comfortable and convienent.

Thanks. We decided to go with the Hilton Amsterdam since we had Hilton points to cash in. Do you know anything about a tram that you can use to get to the various exhibits? Since we only have 24 hours, we don't want to waste too much time walking.

The Hilton is only a short walk from the Van Gogh and Rijks museums. You would probably spend longer waiting for a tram that you will walking to them.
However tram 5, which is the one of the ones you need from Centraal to the Hilton, is also the line you need for those two museums.
The Connexxion Schiphol Hotel Shuttle Suze mentions also serves the Hilton and is your best bet for getting there from the airport. Much easier than the train/tram combo. You can also book it for your return trip.

Oh and walking is one of the best things you can do in your 24 hours. After the museums have a walk around and enjoy the city.

It's only € 15,00 one-way or € 24,50 round-trip per person. They deal with your luggage, etc. In my experience it's very smooth and organized, and I think well worth the price rather than trying to do the train then the tram (assuming you have suitcases with you in a city you aren't familiar with).

Thanks so much for the great information. Do you have to reserve in advance? How do you pay? Do they take credit cards? Do we have to arrive with money exchanged?

You can buy your ticket at the Conexxion desk at Schiphol, or at the tourist information desk there. You can even buy them from the driver, but then you will need cash. You do need to reserve for the return journey but you can do that when you buy your tickets.

E-mail [email protected] to check if they accept credit cards.

I had cash and paid the driver. I knew I was going to use Conexxion in advance so just looked for their signs at the airport. My hotel front desk helped me arrange the return (it was awhile ago & honestly I don't remember if I paid round-trip or two separate tickets). Whatever... it was easy!
