Amalfi Coast , where to stay

I am looking for quaint hotels, in Positano, Sorrento, Capri and Amalfi.
and Ravello.
Also for suggestions of spending more time in one of those cities and then taking daily trips to some of the others.
Thank you.

Hi

We greatly enjoyed a week in Praiano at the Hotel Le Sirene (www.lesirene.com).

See my trip report:

In Ravello, the Hotel Villa Maria is very beautiful and the views from the terrace are to die for! The website is www.villamaria.it

Hello,

My wife and I were just in all of the towns you mentioned. If we had to pick the best place to stay it would be in Ravello. It's quiet and there are less tourists. As for a hotel I cannot suggest one there since we stayed in Positano.

If you decide to stay in Positano try the Villa Franca, it's not in the middle of the main area but the hotel looked nice. http://www.villafrancahotel.it/welcome.html

If you stay in Sorrento advoid at all costs the Villa Maria, it's very dirty. We moved to another hotel which was the same price and very very nice with a great view of the Bay of Naples, Grand Hotel Royal (http://www.manniellohotels.it/royal/ukframe.html). The Excelsior Vittoria was extremetly nice as well but it's expensive. If we could afford it we would have definately stayed here. It's right off of the main square and has access to everything including the beach. (http://www.exvitt.it/).

Capri is a nice place to stay but becomes very crowded with tourist. If you stay there make sure that your hotel is not in the marina area. You want to be in the town of Capri or in Anna Capri.

Hope this helps.

---Mark

We are going to Positano in September and based on reviews from Tripadvisor.com we selected Villa Tartana in Positano as it was a small, B&B type of hotel right on the water and it was 150 euros. Many of the hotels we looked at were more expensive than that. I guess it depends on your budget. I hope this hotel is as good as it sounds!!

Good Luck!

It really depends on what you want to do. We stayed in Sorrento and loved it - its' more a town than a small village like some of the others so there is more choice of restaurants and shops. Also its more handy for day trips to Pompeii and Naples and the Hovercraft to Capri leaves from the center of town. And you canstill easily tour Amalfi and Positano in day trips by car or boat.

But if you want a more hanging out vacation you may be happier with one of the smaller villages - and not care that it takes longer to get to other places for day trips.

Just spent 4 nights in Ravello in late May at the Hotel Villa Maria. Dont confuse this with the Villa Maria in Sorrento. The one in Ravello was lovely with a nice restaurant and extremely cordial staff. Ravello is beautiful and its a must see - however -not the best for day trips as its the farthest away. Positano is centrally located and probably the best for day trips. I also was underwhelmed with Amalfi compared to the rest and personally would not stay there. Not as much to see. You could easily stay in Ravello for two nights and have a great and charming experience.

We stayed at the Bellevue Syrene in Sorrento and found it to be a good base location for exploring the entire Amalfi Coast region. The hotel itself is beautiful with some rooms overlooking the Bay of Naples. The staff was kind & courteous and the rooms were spacious, clean and had lovely architectural details & furniture. We thoroughly enjoyed this hotel, and although it is not inexpensive, it was a pleasure. It also has it's own swimming pier if you are going in summer. Sorrento as a previous poster mentioned is a little larger town than some of the others, so this may be a benefit as well. I would definitely not base in Capri, as you'll be taking a boat every day on top of a bus or other mode of transport. I think my second choice would be Positano...and I'd follow Ira's suggestions in a heartbeat! Looks like I'll be planning another trip to the AC for next spring...so keep the suggestions coming! Can't wait to be back there! Trish
