airfare to London
I'm planning a trip to London next summer. Have lots of time but want to get the best airfare.

What is a reasonable airfare to London from the east coast (Pittsburgh) in July?

Is there a particular month that summer airfares usually drop to their lowest?

I think a "good" airfare from the east coast to London in July would be between $600 - 700. Obviously that is the peak travel time from the US to Europe. Having said that, since you have so much time, I would begin checking the major travel web sites (expedia/travelocity/orbitz, etc.) daily for the dates you want to travel. Sometimes you can chance upon a really good airfare ($400 - 500). The last two summers, I've flown to London in early June (which is still sort of the "shoulder season") for $450. If you see a good bargain, though, jump on it -- chances are that it won't last more than a few hours.

If you get a flight for under $500 (including all airport taxes) you have done pretty well. You should be able to get it for less though if you look hard and are prepared to fly on airlines such as Icelandair (very good airline but they wake you up to change planes just over halfway across the Atlantic).

Getting a bargain airfare in July is harder than almost any other month (August might be a tie).

In specific answer to your question for best time to find a bargain fare for travel in July - - it might occur as early as March, or late as May. You will have to watch like a hawk to find the same kinds of fares that are much more readily found for June or September.

Last of all, It might be a good idea to check in somewhat regularly (especially in spring) at the Cheap flights forum of www.eurotrip.com - - Don there is the master of finding good air travel bargains.

Best wishes,

Rex
