Agriturismo in Slovenia
Fodorites, every the source of excellent advice, again I turn to you.
Family of 4 including 2, 20-something "children" travelling to Slovenia on a bit of an ancestry tour for 4 days in May. Family orginated from Tanca Gora and Bela Kra... areas, but I am drawn to the natural beauty areas of the west. We are not museum-goers.
I am torn between basing in Ljubljana or an agriturismo with wine/brandy making and farm animals, and making day trips in different directions. The city has the opportunity for easy food/drink/nightlife and the country stay, authenticity and get-to-know the people appeal. We don't speak a word of Slovenian. The parents did instead of spelling words when we were kids...
Will hire a car.
Thoughts on either stay option and travel times for realistic day jaunts would be wonderful!
Thank you.

Hi there KuzmaGirl!
Nothing simpler
Stay at the Hudicevec
http://www.hudicevec.com/ENG/
Great place for kids and adults and has a working farm and is central to the Ljubljana\Caves\Lipica\Coast\Trieste for easy day trips.
Check it out!

Hi KuzmaGirl!
Now you're testing the memory!! We can answer you as we have friends going out there on the weekend 26th/27th so we'll get back to you. Great views abound though in all directions. We recommend the short hikes or some cycling maybe.
Driving to Bled is about 1.30hr depending on traffic through Ljubljana. Two different areas though, so you really need to stay in Bled to appreciate the immense beauty. We recommend the Hisa Sonca at www.hisa-sonca.eu, a great spot for peace and quiet but still close to Vintgar and Bled.
Basically, you need more than 4 days!!! There is so much to do and see.
Take care,
Kodman!

You should check out this site:
http://www.turizemvzidanicah.si/
It's a joint effort of the EU, Slovenian Tourist Board, and local tourist offices and municipalities to promote eco/agro/vineyard tourism in the region of Posavje (to the east of Bela Krajna where your family is from). I'm actually the editor of Slovenia's locally produced In Your Pocket city guides and just spent the past four weekends in the region doing research for our new guide. There are ton of these cottages (almost all newly renovated and really nice) that you can rent in picturesque countryside villages for as little as €60/night for a two-floor place that can sleep up to six.
Of course the country is so small, that pretty much anything from the coast to mountains to plains in the east is an easy day trip no matter where you're staying. In general I would always recommend spending your first few days in Ljubljana, taking a couple trips, and then if you find somewhere you really like you can move there for a few more days. Peak tourist season doesn't start till late May/early June, so you should have too much trouble making or changing reservations last minute.
Cheers
