A few days in Tuscany - no car?

We have decided to extend our Italy trip by one day with the first 3-4 days in Rome, and taking a train to the Tuscan region - considering staying a few days at an agriturismo or hotel somewhere near Florence or maybe Lucca. We do not want to have a car so I'm wondering if this is possible. I am a newbie to Italy but i have been doing LOTs of research. We like the idea of having 2 or 3 days in more relaxing setting, maybe with a pool but also being able to go to a restaurant and see some sights. We are planning to hire a tour guide/company (we have many good recommendations) Thoughts?

You can try someplace like this in Fiesole. (You take a train to Florence and then a bus or taxi to Fiesole.)

We spent a week in Lucca without a car. We did use Tau Touring to drive us to the beach clubs a couple of days but otherwise we relaxed and enjoyed Lucca. I would totally recommend Lucca and Tau Touring was excellent.

Personally, I'm glad I opted to have a car in Tuscany. The suggestion of Fiesole is a good one. It's a beautiful town, lots to do, great restaurants and the Roman and Etruscan ruins. Yes, you can take a bus or a car service down to Florence, which is a walking town anyway.

If you want a different type of stay, how about staying in Lucca--an incredibly beautiful medieval town. One of my favorites in all of Tuscany. You could hire a car service to take to over to Pisa or perhaps to Vinci... great museum about Da Vinci there. Beautiful little town.

For my all time favorite town, I'd suggest Pienza. It is stunning, especially the views from its promenade along the south side of the town. It's a hilltown, but when you are in the old part of town it is fairly flat, if that's a concern at all. You would need a car to venture outside... Roman baths, churches with Gregorian chanting, amazing vistas of the Crete Sinese (clay hills), and perhaps a day in Siena.

Wow - thank you everyone. I'm going to look into all of these suggestions. I may have more questions.

BTW we are starting in Rome at the Fortyseven hotel.

I don't think Pienza is a great choice without a car, unless you will use drivers the entire time.

Lucca seems like a good option because there are places right outside the walls with pools, there are available taxis, the train station is walkable from most places (buses and taxis too) and there are walkable restaurants.

I sent clients without a car to Montepulciano and they used drivers each day.

You don't a car and driver to go from Lucca to Pisa. Just take the train.
