My plan is 2 nights in Venice but the other 5 are up in the air.I would like quaint old towns and a day or 2 near one of the lakes the lakes.

Tomas,

First question, have you visited Venice before? If not, I would make it 3 days. March is a great time to visit Venice - no crowds. Weather could be cold. I'm not sure I would recommend the lakes in March.

I would skip the lakes in March, but I would try to include the Dolomites---look at Val Gardena. I agree, at least 3 days in Venice.

Hello Tomas, in that two nights in Venice only gives you one full day in Venice without arriving or departing I would suggest three nights in Venice.

There are so many wonderful places in that area. Padova, Bologna, Ravenna, Trieste, Treviso, Verona and so forth.

Do you have a map of Italy..the most important for you is of Northern Italy of course. If not I would get one and I would get one that shows the names in Italian versus English (example Padova is Padua in English)

I assume you will be flying into and departing from the Marco Polo Airport (Venice airport). I also assume you will be travelling by train rather then renting a car for the days that you will not be staying in Venice. If so in case you do not have it, here is the Italian train website in English. Note, use the Italian names for places rather then the English version. (Venezia versus Venice)

http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

In case you do not know the train station in Venice is the Santa Lucia Station. Mestre is the train station outside of the islands..on the mainland. If you need to switch trains in Mestre the train trip is only ten minutes or so from the Santa Lucia train station.

With a map and the train website you can check out the lakes..it will no doubt be chilly but who knows, the weather is never predictable anymore.

Have fun planning your trip and post back with what ever questions or thoughts that you have. There is a wealth of information to be had from various Fodorites.

Have fun beginning 2008 planning for your wonderful trip to Northern Italy!

I liked Bologna when I visited in October. It is a great city to stroll/walk around, has wonderful food, good churches and architecture. and nice markets. You can spend a day or two there sightseeing easily. Plus, it has great train connections so it makes a good base for daytrips by train to Modena and Parma.

Consider flying open jaw (into one city and out of another one). I found Milan easy to fly into, perhaps into Milan and out of Venice.

I would add some of your 'extra' time to staying in Venice longer.
