4 Days between Rome and Venice

Travelling from Rome to Venice in early February for the Carnival. We will be travelling by train, and are looking for possibly two cities we could stop at for two nights each. We went to Florence on a previous trip, and would like to see something new. Any thoughts on a couple of interesting stops that that we could get around on foot or public transportation, and have some cold weather friendly things to do. Thanks.

Bologna for sure, and four days there would be perfect. You walk under covered porticos all over the city so rain wouldn't be a factor either.I recently spent four days there and enjoyed it.
Or two days in Bologna and then two in either Verona or Vicenza.

Siena (easily reached by bus from Rome)? Or do you want a smaller town?

We would prefer to stay on the train as opposed to the bus, and it appears the bus is the best option from Rome to Siena. I have been reading some posts on this site about Bologna, and it definitely looks like it may fit in well for a couple of days (or more). Was able to find very reasonable lodging at the Metropolitan Hotel, which seems to be close to the town center. Will research Verona and Vicenza a bit, and see what looks most interesting. Thanks for all the help thus far.

Have you been to Orvieto? It's on the train line between Rome/Florence.

Siena is also on a train line, but the train requires changes where the bus doesn't. You can also take the bus from Siena to Bologna.

Both Siena and Orvieto are easy to see on foot.

bob - if you can get easily from Bologna to Orvieto, which according to www.trenitalia.it you can, [direct trains at about 9am and 11am, taking approx 3 hours, otherwise slightly longer via Florence]

IMO that would make an ideal mix - Orvieto is most interesting and is only 2 hours or so from Rome for your onward journey.

sounds like a terrific trip!

I would pair Bologna and Padua. While most people see Padua as a daytrip from Venice, it is a fabulous destination for an overnight or two on your way to Venice.
