3 extra days In Italy, where do we go?

Family of 4 travelling to Italy next week (last minute booking). We are in Tuscany for 7 days an have three additional day unbooked before we depart from Rome We were thinking Sorrento?
Also if that was our destination, would
driving a rental car there be crazy?

At this late date, I'd look around for lodging in a few possible destinations. I don't think this is going to be easy... Driving a rental car to Sorrento isn't crazy, but if you find lodging, inquire about parking.

August in Italy you stay away from the sea. Sorrento is by the sea. All of Europe are at the beaches in August. A couple of years ago we were in Florence watching the news. The last day of August cars were bumper to bumper from Sorrento to Rome. Our family is on Ischia in the tourist business and they are swamped in August. We never go to visit at that time. I would suggest a few days in Rome.

Certainly Rome would be great; we always spend a couple or more days on our way in or out of Italy via Rome.

However, if there are reasons why you don't wan't to stay in Rome, consider Umbria. And get a place with a pool.

Here'a rec, between Assisi and Perugia, closer to Assisi:

We stayed here and loved it. Their rooms are more like small apartments and can accomodate a family of four. And the food is the best... I can't think of any better.

thats not enough time to drive to Amalfi from Tuscany to return to Rome!
Take into account all the tourist & the italian vacation the whole month of August. Head to Rome. So much to see & if you want to do an excursion outside of Rome there is Hadrian Villa or Pompeii can be done in one day but would take a tour. I strongly recommed spending those 3 days in Rome - The Forum the colissium Vatican Sistine Chapel Pantheon Trastevere, Campidolio Piazza Navona & in the summer there music festivals in some of the churches & opera in the Bath of Caracalla. Enjoy La vita dolce & just sit in a cafe & enjoy

Hi Pam,

If you will be departing from Rome, why not spend the last 3 days in Rome?

If it gets too boring, you can visit Orvieto as a daytrip.

Romulus, you seem to very well educated in Italy! However, I've taken
all advice into consideration, now I'm even more confused. It seems to be a toss up between Rome and Sorrento for different reasons. Any more advise?

I recommend that you spend the 3 days in Rome. It is a wonderful and exciting city with something to appeal to all ages.

Logistically it seems like a good idea simply to spend it in Rome.

Well honestly, Rome is the greatest city in the world. If you've never been to Rome, go there for sure! It's incredible and should not be missed. Oh my last trip, I was traveling with a friend who had never been to Rome. I set aside 5 days to tour the city and show him the major places. Even 5 days weren't enough to experience Rome.

Sorrento is, on the other hand, relaxed and charming. And I would say that 3 days there would be enough to see the major places.

I would suggest if you've never been to Rome, go there. You will love it and will not regret the Roman experience! If you've already done Rome, try Sorrento, it's different than most other cities.
