2 night side trip from Rome suggestions?
What town/city would you suggest for 2 nights? We'd prefer something a more of a relaxed pace than Rome. We will be staying in Rome for 4 nights, doing the side trip for 2 nights and then back to Rome for 2 nights. Flights have already been booked in and out of Rome for Mid-May. Thanks!

I was honestly going to say Naples which is a great 2 night getaway from Rome -- except that "relaxed pace" isn't Naples.
Orvieto is nice. Assisi is another good option. And I frankly think Florence can be given a fair amount of justice with a two night stay -- although dodging the lines of tour groups doesn't seem "relaxing" to me either.
Are you training or driving? With a car, I'd actually think of heading to Pienza or Montepulciano for a couple nights.

We will taking trains. After a bit more research I think it's between Assisi and Orvieto. I feel like Florence would just be too much. Thoughts? We're leaning towards Assisi right now, since we could always do a day trip from Rome to Orvieto.

I loved both Orvieto and Assisi and I don't think you could go wrong with either. Orvieto is charming at night and in the early morning. I don't think a day trip does it justice as there is quite a lot to see with the Etruscan ruins, the beautiful Cathedral and the charming town itself.
4 nights in Rome is a good start but there is so much to see and do there. You will be grazing the surface really and spending a day elsewhere would not be my recommendation with so little time (unless you have been there before).

On our day trip to Ovieto, we arrived there early by train from Rome. We covered most of the main part of the town on foot, explored some shops and workshops, visited the cathedral, and the old well, going all the way to the bottom and back up. We had a wonderful leisurely lunch, and did the tour of the underground ruins. We walked most of the perimeter of the town for views. In the late afternoon we left, not sure what else we could have done, actually taking an earlier train that we had originally planned. What did we miss? (Of course I realize any town has a certain greater charm in the evening).
We also did a day trip by train from Rome to Assisi, against the advice of several people. We toured more churches there than I really cared to, spent a great deal of time at the main ones, walked most of the town, had a delightful lunch, and got a nice feeling for the town (less crowded with visitors than I expected). In all honesty, again I'm not sure what we'd have done on a second day if we had chosen to stay 2 nights -- or even one.
My personal choice faced with what you have would be to stay in Rome longer and do both these towns as full day trips -- but I know many would disagree with that.
For several years now we have been renting an apartment in Rome for a week, which makes for cost effective lodging, and doing a few daytrips out. We really enjoy returning to Rome at night.
