11 day Ireland trip report-Day 6

Day 6: May 21, 2002, The Plan: Check out of our B&B and head north for a three day stay in a prebooked B&B in Salthill(Galway).

The morning brought nice weather for a change. It was too early for breakfast so Don and I decided to explore this steak farm we were on. We walked along an uphill dirt road past an old barn when suddenly appeared one big old cow walking up from the other side of the hill. It stopped and so did we. We stared at each other for a minute. Picture the last scene in “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly”. The beast stuck out its head and let out a blood curdling 30 second long MOOOOO. We backed down. It continued over to the barn where it stopped and repeated that performance three more times. I just knew that I was going to get blamed for molesting this cow. Maria told us later that its calf was taken from her last night because it was sick and she was just looking for it. I bought a hamburger at the first opportunity.
Day 6 cont:

We made good time to Salthill on good roads and with fair weather (of course it rained off and on), and checked into our new B&B. Our plan now was to spend three days here and explore the Connemara. The B&B was adequateas was our host. Salthill is a summer resort area with the standard summer resort stuff. But in late May, it was still too cool for most tourists so for us it turned out to be just a place to bed down for the night. It looked like there were a lot of things to do there at the right time of year.

We arrived in Salthill with too much time to call it quits but with not enough time to do any serious sightseeing so we decided to run up N59 to Aughnanure castle and check it out. It was a typical RUNE, wasn’t much to write about, cost just a few Euros, but killed a few hours. Later that evening we paid too much for average food in a nearby restaurant then turned in. Tune in for Day 7.
I was in Connemara at my grandmother's house from 5/18-5/21. You might have passed it. It's on the road to Clifden (N59) just before Peacockes in Maam Cross.

Actually Aughnanure castle is in Oughterard. I was there Sunday night - in the Boat Inn and then again on Monday for lunch. Just felt like telling you that. Enjoying your trip report.

Mark:

We were in Ireland May 9-27. We got to experience some of that weather. It's my third trip in May and easily the worst weather. Even the locals were saying that it was much worse than usual.

My feeling about Doolin is that it's good for one night unless you want to go out to the Arans from there. I don't think I would spend a week there or anything. The music is pretty good but that depends on who is sitting in on the session. Perhaps you didn't get a chance to see some of the truely bad. We heard a band in Oranmore (seemed like a father and son team) that loaded in boat loads of equipment and mainly played Country Western style tunes. Now that might have been passed of as just getting unlucky with the music selection (depending on whether or not you are a CW fan) except dad played the electric guitar while the son joined in on 1 finger chords from his cool automatic piano and 1 finger melodies. The best part was watching the son try to figure out his electronic drum machine. Apparently, he had just gotten the toy, and was having a hard time programming it. There were significant breaks between the tunes while he played with it and each tune started with a couple of measures intro so they could pick up the tempo. Pretty cool eh?

Keep em coming

Bill
