What to wear to dinner ?
We are taking our first cruise on the Ecstasy. What do we wear to dinner? Is it formal ? Is a sportcoat O.K. ? Do the ladies wear gowns? When I was younger I did take a cruise on The QE 2 and we wore Tux's. We dont want to feel out of place. What is the norm?
Thank you all for your help.

Rusty:

You will see all sorts from jeans on up. For the standard dinner you will probably be most comfortable in business casual (i.e. slacks and nice golf type or button up shirt) Ladies will wear nice outfits also.

Formal attire in most cases won't be worn except on "Formal" nights...on our cruise there were 2 formal nights where Tuxs or suits were the mainstay...but you still would see people in business casual.

For my money..I actually rented a Tux through the cruise line..it was waiting in the cabin when we arrived, and was left in the cabin when we left....didn't cost any more than renting at home and looks very nice. If you are splurging on the cruise get the Tux and a formal gown for the lady. You'll fit in fine and it will be lots of fun.

We loved the cruise and can't wait to go again.

Jon

Angie, On the casual nights you will usually see the men in something like khakis or dress pants and a golf shirt. Most of the women will be in a sundress or slacks with a cute top. I think I would classify the attire as "resort casual" Hope that helps.

Rusty:

If you booked through a travel agent, they should be able to find out about formal vs. casual. If you went directly through the cruise line, I would just call their customer service.

I don't know if it is standard or not, but for our cruise (7 days) we had two days that we were at sea all day and had no port stops....those were the evenings where formal dining attire was required.

Again we knew this all in advance from out travel agent. So we were prepared. You might give your a call.

Jon

Rusty, I'm sorry I answered Angie's question and completely skipped yours. On a 3 or 4 day cruise there will be only one formal night. At that time a dark suit or tux is fine. There will be far less tux than suits. The ladies wear anything from long gowns to just a very nice dress or dressy pantsuit. You will see quite a variety so you have a bit of choice. When are you on the Ecstasy? We're booked on her the first of December.

Many thanks to all the fellow cruisers out there. I'll be in my suit. Thanks for all the help. When I was younger we took a cruise on the QE2. Every night was formal. I didnt really like the cruise. The passangers were all kinda old and stuffy.( No offense to any one I hope.) We have traveled to lots of islands in the caribean and like it there. We thought we would try a short cruise to see how we would like it. I hear carnivals cruises are a lot more fun than most cruise lines. I hope that is true. We are sailing on Dec. 1st. I hope its a lot of fun so we might try cruises to other ports. Is there a lot to do on the ship? Are they crowded?
This forum can answer any question you may have no matter were you go. I always try to return the favor to anybody who also needs help.
