Fall foliage cruise
Looking into a cruise through parts of New England and Canada on the Norwegian line's Norwegian Gem next September (2016). Has anyone taken their cruise? What is their suite like?

I took a land tour to see the fall colors, and took a cruise in that area later. Lots of history, both were very interesting, and it definitely worth it to visit.
Never been on the Gem, but overall Norwegian is a good cruise line, I wouldn't hesitate to sail with them.

I just wanted to report back on my cruise to Canada/NE on the NCL Gem (I got off the ship on 10/3). We had a great time. We were in Acadia National Park on 10/1, and while it is spectacular, no real color yet. We were about two weeks early I would say.
The ship is very nice. It is going into dry dock later this month and they will freshen it up, which will be good. Crew is very attentive and always smiling. We thought the food was very good. We had a mini-suite, which was roomy and comfortable (as cabins go). Can't comment on a real suite since ours was really just a deluxe balcony cabin. Mini-suite is misleading.
I think you will enjoy this cruise. We did.

I've sailed on the Gem as well and enjoyed it. These are good ships, albeit large. The itinerary is much improved now, with a stop in Maine instead of an additional stop in Canada. I like that change and hope it continues.
However, any cruise in September runs the risk of seeing little to no color at all, even in Canada. This year there was nothing in September. Nada. Everything is two weeks late, so instead of reaching peak next week upstate, it may not be until late October (and may be pretty bad this year). Peak is only now being reached in northern Vermont in higher elevations. If you really want to see fall foliage, don't do a cruise in September at all. Do it in October. (This is why September cruises are so cheap.)
