Sorry...posted this too quickly....
I meant to include more, Roatan, Cozumel, Akumal, Virgin Gorda....all offer good snorkeling from shore.
I am a huge fan of the shore snorkeling in St John, Grand Cayman and also thought Akumal was excellent. Been researching Roatan, and West Bay Beach looks incredible for shore snorkeling, and it gets excellent reviews for the reef which is very close to shore.

I do believe Bonaire is the front runner for me but I haven't figured out a good way to get there from the Midwest. Any tips on that? Can you get lodging there off the beaten path?
We LOVED Eluthera. By far our favorite overall island experience so far. I loved reading about Small Hope Bay. I don't think the lodge would work for us, but after reading about it I am taking a closer look at Abacos.
Cozumel and West Bay, while great snorkeling I think would be a bit too busy for us. I probably should have been more specific in my request. Thanks!
