Melissa, we just returned from spending the holiday week in Puerto Rico. This is so depressing - I'm looking out my window at well over a foot of snow, gray skies and trees covered with white. I don't see a palm tree anywhere!

As Parrot Pop is using the snowblower n the driveway for the the THIRD time today I'm chomping at the bit to be at the VO Travel Show on next Saturday to book my winter trip...West of Boston has been hit hard and I could be packed in 10 minutes. There was a gentleman last night on tv who was franticaly doing his driveway so he could get to the airport this a.m.to go to the Carribean..

I love to travel but this is why I will not travel to the caribbean in the winter. It's too damn depressing. We take our vacations in May and November to the warmer weather and go to cold climate trips like Vermont and Lake Placid in the winter. My mind and body cannot make the adjustment from cold/dark to sunny/hot to cold/dark, maybe its just me, but the depression just isn't worth it. Try this - go outside and make snow angels, but I do feel your pain sister!

Understand your frustrations, but we leave at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow for a month at our condo in Grand Cayman. Won't miss the Chicago weather one bit!

Oh, Sue, I'm so jealous. Does your condo happen to have an extra bedroom?

PR was great, but I'll go wherever the sun and heat is just about now. We just broke through the 5 feet of snow at the end of our driveway so I will be able to get to Logan really fast. And I always have a bag packed just in case.

Have a wonderful trip!

Jamie...morethan 20 years ago I decided I was suffering from SAD...and a week in the sun during February brought great relief. Now, when we come back I think about our next vacation..probably in September cruising to Bermuda.. I understand feeling depressed is a normal part of ending your vacation and I overcome it by thinking of my next one and the one after that and the one after that...even if its only in my dreams..lol My first day in the sun in the winter renews my soul...I can feel the weariness and misery just being pullled out of me as I sit on a beach or around a pool...

We had purchased a new home the year before last. We did not go away last winter to a warm destination as we had every year before. We regretted it. We were more depressed than going, and coming back to the cold. It breaks up the monotony of winter. Granted several weeks after you are back, it seems like you never left. But it still feels wonderful to leave snow, the cold and step off a plane to sun, warmth, turquoise water and white sugar sand. It is the ultimate lift of the soul. I agree. There is nothing quite like it. 3 weeks from today, I will be in the warmth. Ya-hoo!! I can't wait! That new furniture for the family room can wait!

Have to agree with poster 'Pam' - having the break in Winter to the Carib. does break up the monotony. We usually go in March, and before we know it, Spring comes to the NYC area just about right after we get home.

Hubby noted to me that the nights are getting just a little bit longer (not MUCH, but a little), AND he's counting the days til we go away in a few weeks.

I don't mind a Wintery day when I can stay in, veg-out in cozy blankets with a warm cup of tea, and start/continue the book of my choice.

Oh, Tim, you're such a tease. Enjoy the warm weather and the beach! In a few months we'll be back to warmer weather and sunshine. Unfortunately, in New England, the winter is so long and the summer so short. Have fun!

I always have to wonder why my ansesters decided to move to Canada instead of say New Zealand, Australia. There has to be warmer places in the Commonwealth than Canada ( I do love my country, just not the snow!!)

I'm in the same camp as Jamie. I've traveled 2x to the CAribbean during the winter and find the Cold-hot, hot-cold a bit depressing. The last trip I got a cold 2 days prior to returning from the tropics. I was more depressed after returning. Hey, reading this travel board does help though.

Glad to know I'm not alone. After being in the caribbean in 85/sunny weather then to fly into JFK is way way too depressing, its just not worth it for me. I always get sick, my skin feels like its shrinking in the cold and I always feel worse than before I left. I already have my 2 vacations booked for 2003, I'm happy with thatand going to Vermont in a few weeks (more SNOW) Although it is very cold + windy (-2 wind chill) today and I slipped and fell on the ice in the parking lot of my bank. The only thing hurt was my ego.....I think I looked like a cartoon when I fell. I hate these damn ice storms more on the way tonight!!!!!

Theres always the Shoal Bay Anguilla webcam

Yes I know that ice is horrible. I am not far away in Philadelphia. Your back may feel fine for now, but watch it in the next couple of days. Delayed pain. I still want out of this nasty weather. I hate the wind. It is horrible.
